I just stumbled on this from the 2010 LA Amp Fest. My apologies for being 4 years late to the party!

Most of these amps sound great... though a few are a little saturated and less articulate then others. My favorite is probably the Friedman Dirty Shirley. It's just so dayum rich sounding. Original Marshall plexi is right up there, being quit full. Hard to believe that in reality, we've improved on that tone very little (if any) in over 40 years!!! The Ceriatone is right up underneath those amps to my [admittedly-biased] ears, tho a hair less rich and full. The PWEs are also awesome and rich... though a bit too saturated IMO to be in this shootout.

Anyways... I shouldn't have given away my impressions and tainted the jury pool, but I'm curious to see what you guys have to say regarding the classic tones in these amps...

Just as a quick listen, I liked the original the best. The Ceriatone wasn't bad. The Event Horizons and Dirty Shirley was pretty cool. The rest were unremarkable.

I'm surprised no one has responded.

Ceriatone makes a damn good plexi, I find the builds demo'd on youtube and the few videos James Lugo posted make that thing a total bargain and a tone monster for people who don't want to shell out the cash for the real deal. Furthermore, you get a PTP amp over a PCB amp making tweaks here or there easy and the build quality is top notch. Just run in those caps for 40 years and it will sound as good as old mustards do..

I liked the Friedman and reeves the most, the ceriatone and '68 also good, didn't care for the rest.

Couldn't agree more. I'm SO diggin' my Ceri 36W RP. The thing just sounds so damn good! I want a 50 or 100 watt Ceri next.

Here she is in a Marshall small box headshell...

For traditional plexi sounds the Reeves, Ceri and Marshall all sounded great. I dug the EH's for a more modern plexi take....the rest

That Friedman sounds outstanding! I swear though every time I hear a clip of a PWE I want one more and more. Love them. Lotta $ though for a basement amp.

I've got an EH3 whenever you want to pull the trigger.

Life really can be that easy. ;)

Wow... totally forgot about this thread!

I've since replaced the Ceri 36W RP that I posted in this thread with a Ceri JTM and Chupacabra 50. Awesome amps! I also had a Friedman Pink Taco in my hands for a few days and it was an awesome sounding little beast. I definitely prefer the thump of 50-100 watt amps, but the little Friedman was enough to wet my appetite for the bigger ones for sure.

I'm really interested in the Pink Taco. Want that plexi sound/tone but 50w is never going to fly in my house and more than likely to big for any of the very small gigs I play.

Who's playing the tele? That guitar just sounded good thru just about everything
