Randy = neoclassical playing with structures not heard before in the context of metal (helped too that Ozzy was a breakout icon at that time)
 Ozzy was a washed-up, has-been drunk. Randy's playing and writing (along with Bob Daisley) led to Ozzy becoming a "breakout icon"...I don't think Oz's status had much to do with Randy's success. For anybody who was around in those days, Ozzy/Randy were still a fairly underground phenomenon until Randy died, at which point he gained legendary status. Ozzy (more like Sharon actually) capitalized on the momentum and rode it on to a lucrative career.

I think Kirk is sloppy as hell as of recent years...After the Black album he slowly became consumed by his Wah. For this I can see why people think he may suck. Metallica as a whole is not known for being overly complicated at all, but Kirk's solo's often fit the song 100% perfectly. Especially from RTL through to the Black album, even Load - Reload, although very bluesy and many repeated phrases they still fit the song and rhythm section perfectly for the most part.

Randy & Jimmy - can't deny their rock God status!

I wish I was as sucky and as sloppy as Kirk and Jimmy. As for randys tone Its not one of my favorites but man was he bad ass. Just saying...

Randy wrote great tunes and had great technique, but he did have terrible tone. The first teo far outweighed the last. Jimmy, was a master in the studio and new what songs to steal. Kirk listens to James and Lars and whatever the producer of the day tells him to do.
