Klon type overdrive and the best clones

I've been looking for a nice Klon type pedal for awhile and can't make up my mind. I'll make it short and say that at the top of my list is the Archer, simply cause I like it's smaller size, it looks cool and not one bad review. If any other suggestions that aren't over $200 please chime in.

Couple questions: Is the Klon similar to the Timmy pedal as far as the basic tone characteristics
Is a Klon type overdrive versatile for all styles of music including hard rock solos and riffs?

You should check out the new Tumnus pedal by Wampler. Geartalk did a shootout on periscope last weekend between it, archer, ikon, KTR, klon, and the soul food. The Tumnus killed. Gonna order one myself this weekend.

I had an original Klon back in the 90's, and currently have a Timmy on my board. I would say that they are quite different tonally...the Timmy is much more flexible.

Depending on how you use it, yeah, it could used for all types of music. It doesn't have a ton of drive but it does a good job of adding another layer of depth and dimension to an already overdriven amp. I preferred it for dirty rhythm tones as it doesn't give the mid push that I like for solos, but it can certainly be used for solos depending on your base tone and what you're going for.

I'd recommend trying out a second hand EHX Soul Food since they're dirt cheap and will get you 90% of the way there. If you dig it, you can then upgrade to an Archer, Aluminum Falcon, etc.

I played through a Tone Bakery Creme Brulee as well as a Klon KTR a few weeks ago. The Creme sounded really nice on it's own as did the KTR. The Brulee is pretty reasonable price wise. I have never played an original Klon, fwiw. The KTR was a little nastier (in a good way) on the high end of the gain knob. Like, approaching distortion and semi-Rat-ty, imo. You could do some cock rock rock with it I would think. You might need a boost for soloing though. It also excelled equally at boosting a dirty amp.

I have never tried a Timmy as I know up front it won't have enough juice for my tastes. TGP is a good resource as well, if you are so inclined.

The Archer (original silver) is one of the best overdrives I've played. It excels as a clean boost or a nice gritty overdrive. Pretty much a dead nuts KTR clone.

I liked this one but not for a Klon type. Had many of the clones and have the KTR. Hsvr not tried an Archer. I like the earlier Monsterpiece Stud as well. All you need really. Those and a Cussack Screamer.

I went with a now discontinued byoc silver pony. I keep meaning to borrow my friends soul food to compare. What makes klones like the silver pony stand out from other ods, is two things, one is its a great boost. Second is that it does a great edge of breakup into a clean amp. Boosting another pedal or dirty amp though is where it really shines.

Hey thanks for the advise Rup, and to everybody else for some ideas. If the demo on youtube is anything of a relevant representation, then the Soul Food sounds pretty spot on. Theres many vids, but there one that compares a silver Klon to the Soul Food and they sounded DEAD ON. Some of the prices of these Klon clones are pretty high, but I think the Archer is priced well. I might just get the Archer cause it looks reliable and seems to sound really smooth. I bet blues would sound good using in as a boost with a little grit.

Wampler Tumnus. Smoking pedal for a $180. Amazing boost but I was equally impressed with it as a stand alone overdrive/distortion pedal. It also stacks very well with other pedals.

DAMN man, I play Saturday nights and just got home to find that Pro Guitar Shop's Saturday Night Special was $49 off the gold Archer Ikon!!!! Tuff luck.

Is there a difference between the gold Archer and the silver one? Someone said the gold has more highs.. that true?
