Taking a new JB and putting a rough cast A5 in it will make it sound like a 'new' vintage JB?

Yeah basically because years ago duncan used RC mags in them. they have a different tone/feel than a new polished magnet.

So the Dimarzio EVH pickups are made to sound like a damaged JB?

Just the bridge one is modeled after eddie's "damaged" JB. The neck p'u was modeled after the Custom-custom
which was in the neck spot of Ed;'s EBMM prototype when dimarzio was hired to make the pu's for his sig guitar.,

I am still baffled by the use of that neck pickup... with a custom-custom or bloated-bloated as I like to say. No cut there but maybe for some of the spanky electric clean stuff he did who knows.
