Les Paul Custom owners, what's your bridge pickup?

When I got my first LP std about a year and 1/2 ago, I thought the bridge pup had a bit of a harsh top end to it. I swapped it out with a Steve Morse Dimarzio 200. The guitar sounded better but I still wasn't impressed. A few months ago I decided to put on a set of 10s(strings) to beaf up the tone some. I also saw a vid piece by Bonamasa in which he talked about rolling the bridge tone back on his LP just a tad to get rid of that harshness. With the 10s and my tone on about 7 the harsh top end is gone. With those changes, I decided to put the original pup back in. Now I'm impressed...sounds great!!!

I assume you are talking about Burstbucker Pros? Great pickup too, but 498T kills it IMO, unless you are a blues player. Rolling back the tone knob is a common trick to add some mids & thickness and get some of the sizzle out. I do it with JB too.

I kind of thought LPs come with 10s on them stock, no?

S.D. recommends a Custom 5. Anyone have any experience with this one?
Custom 5 sucks unless you have a guitar that has no bass or treble....

i have a JB in the bridge of mine. I've also had a Distortion, Custom and Super Distortion...they all sounded good in it.

I don't know if it helps, but I also use to have SD 59' & Distortion in the bridge. Now I just use my MXR EQ with JB & I can make it sound pretty much like any other SD pickup I worked with & some.

For whatever reason all these suggestions just make me want to keep my JB more and more. Keep 'em coming!

I have a the burstbucker 2 pro in my '03 Standard. Compared to my mid 90's LP studio with a 498T, the burstbucker 2 pro is smoother, thicker and has a touch more gain. It may be the LP studio though, but its 490R in the neck sounds great.

My '03 standard came with 9-46  I am going to put 10-46 on it though...

I have a Suhr Doug Aldrich in my LP Custom and it's working great. Lots of output but responds well to playing dynamics unlike most other hot humbuckers I've used in the past.

The JB seems to have an upper mid peak thing that you either love or it drives you crazy. More often than not, it just gets on my nerves.

For the record, I have NO problems or issues with my JB. I think its a great pickup. Its always sounded great with my amps, I'm just seeing what other options are out there. :D

Has anyone tried the Aldrich set? How much can just the bridge pickup be had for?

I have a Rio Grande BBQ in my 68RI Custom. I really, really like it. It's real fat and thick, but it's still my tightest guitar too. I tryed a Distortion and a BK Holy Diver in it too, but I prefere the BBQ in spades. I have an Aldrich on the way right now, but I might put it in one of my other guitars because I think the BBQ mates with my LP so well.

Hey Jason, have you recorded any clips of that BBQ loaded 68RI?

Would love to hear how it sounds.. i need a new bridge pickup for my 78 Custom and i think the BBQ may match well with it! :)

Here's one I did a couple days ago.

Most of my other XTC clips are with my LP too.

I used to use 9s on all of my guitars. The first thing I do when I get a new guitar is put on some new strings...so, when I got the LP I immediately changed the strings...no idea what was originally on it. Anyway, I use 10s now so it's kinda of a moot point. :D

Yes, Burtsbucker does sound thicker & smoother, in fact too much IMO. Again this very much depends on the amp.
