Yup, nothing but a pipe dream for me... and millions of others.

Well, my hope is that the new gubment in the US has raging success with reversing the housing-affordability trend and that other countries follow suit.

Beyond that, I have no hope. :dunno:

globalists are destroying the first world everywhere. Other countries need to find nationalists that want to restore their countries and end the globalists, destruction and invasions.

Australia doesn't have the industrial and agricultural infrastructure to support itself economically. We need imports.
The public has spoken clearly with their wallets about buying cheaper imported goods and services over Australian made.
And this issue regarding imports and migration/increased competition is hardly only a unique problem for Australia.
Ironically, it's global.

At least we're trying to fix it here in the USA.

No argument from me on the industrial front, but last I heard we could feed ourselves 3 times over with the agricultural output we have.

Granted that was a few years ago, but isn't this still the case JD?

unless you're exporting more food that creates a shortage...then have to import food to compensate for the shortage?

this area where I live was known for blue crab; the crabbers discovered they could make more money selling the blue crab in other states (like Maryland, that had over harvested their blue crab) than they could selling it locally, so blue crab became more difficult to find locally, and more expensive. even worse when this is on international scale.

Yup, the same thing's happened with our LNG supplies and Tasmanian Lobsters.

IIRC most of our exports are wheat and barley and we're pretty-set with most other foods so I don't think there's an issue there.

OK, I just looked it up and I was right. It's more than 3 times at 3.3x actually:

Food demand in Australia - Govt Statistics

We export 70% and import 10% apparently.

that's good, your exports are much higher than imports; but the missing 20%?

exporting raw materials vs exporting finished goods are also very different in terms of economics / impact on GDP....Russia has to sell a lot of cheap oil and natural gas to cover the cost of importing manufactured products, especially high tech from China, etc.

Yup, we don't value-add enough IMHO.

The "missing 20%"?

The distinction AFAICT is that we're eating 30% of the locally-produced food. The 10%-imports figure isn't applicable in your calculation.

I think.

that's a good surplus, though I did miss the 20% domestic consumption :(

Yeah I find the figures confusing when I add in the 10%-import figure.

Either way, it's a very-decent surplus.

Actually, we don't eat anywhere near as much lamb / mutton as we used to.

If I'm not mistaken a huge proportion or even most of it is exported, and most of that "live".

Love mutton / lamb myself. The fat is sooo-tasty.

Yeah we had that shocking drought a few years ago, but true, our farming output has always been in surplus as far as I know man
