Corie Walsh, of Frankfort, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the death of her son, Barrett Walsh.
Authorities were called to a home in the 22700 block of Brook Stone Road in Frankfort on Sept. 1 after Walsh's two school-aged children returned home, discovered something was wrong, and ran to a neighbor's for help.
The neighbor found Barrett hanging from a rafter in the basement, brought him down, and attempted CPR. The child was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An 8-month-old child was found unharmed in an upstairs room. Walsh was found fully clothed in a bloody bathtub, with injuries to her wrists and thighs, NBC News reported.
On Tuesday, prosecutors alleged that Walsh made statements indicating she intended to poison her husband when he returned home. Her husband was out of town at the time and flew back to Illinois that evening.
Although prosecutors said Walsh believed she had killed her other children, they were not physically injured.
Walsh's defense attorneys argued that she was experiencing a severe psychotic episode at the time of her son's death and when she spoke with police officers and first responders, saying she was hallucinating, acting incoherently, and displaying behavior inconsistent with what friends and relatives had previously observed.
Prosecutors said Walsh had recently been closely following the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother charged in the deaths of her three children. Walsh reportedly discussed that case with friends in a group message hours before Barrett was found. The filing referenced Walsh’s interest in the trial but did not establish that it caused or directly contributed to her son’s death.
Walsh’s lawyers rejected public speculation that the case was a copycat killing.
Walsh is scheduled to return to court Sept. 24.

How is it that there's even a discussion about if a mother who murdered her 3 children should be in prison? I realize they want this case to cause division and distraction, but this just shows how awful we've become as a society. You think a man who did this would get this privilege or special consideration? Others said it best by saying the pussification of everything.

I don't really associate those two things. I feel sympathy on some level for anyone who screwed up their life that badly with such an awful choice but I feel more sympathy for the people her actions have negatively affected. Hopefully that makes some sense.

Well fine, I agree with you on those points. However, the privilege of being able to use the insanity card, is a very dangerous door to open. People will take advantage if that becomes an option. And I think we agree, if this were a husband, no one would be feeling sympathy for him.

I'm not in favor of the death penalty in this case, and generally I don't like it. It would be much worse consequence to have to sit and think about what she did for the rest of her life. I do feel a little bad for her that she's in a wheelchair, but that doesn't give her an excuse to avoid accountability. Lots of women in America want authority without accountability. Well, you can't have one without the other.
