Went over to a bud's house last night to check out his son's band. They were jamming and trying to get tight for an upcoming opening slot with two other bands. Hard and fast rock. Drums, bass, guitar, single vocal. They were all using in-ears with modeling gizmos, but with mic'd real drums. You can only imagine what that sounded like in the room. I got a wild hair idea, told my buddy about it, and we both left the boys and came back to my place. We loaded up an Ampeg 1×15 bass rig and a HR50+ 1/4 stack and headed back. My buddy's an ex-pro soundguy, so he hobbled together a floor wedge monitor system from stuff in storage. The boys took a break and my buddy & I got to work. In about a half hour, they were having the time of their lives. Loud and proud with shit-eating grins. I'm going to loan them the rigs for the show. They're going to shop for real amps after the gig. Mission accomplished. Lol.

Heck yeah, imagine being stuck with lame modeling junk and in ear monitors and having an old school ayatollah of rock n rolla hook you up with actual amps! I bet they remember that night for the rest of their lives. Good on you BackCrack!! Salute!!!

You just damned yourself to endless rig reiterations for your son which means…… mo money. I endorse this behavior 100%

Thank god. You're doing the lord's work @BackCrack

People don't understand how big of a problem this is for the up-and-coming generations of bands and guitarists.

There's an entire generation that don't know how to ride their volume knob, control their dynamics, or ride the tiger with a tube amp on stage. I almost guarantee these kids will have way more fun making music, and they will also become a better live band.

99.9% of the "modeling is the only way" people that you encounter online are either people who have never played a gig in their entire life, or touring pros who gig at venues with million dollar sound reinforcement.

The entire gigging "middle class" is still tube amp dependent, and revolves around the volume and power of tube amps 🤷‍♂️

I was discussing this with @FelixOnStrings yesterday. Fewer opportunities to play loud means fewer younger guys get the chance to build those skills which ultimately means the death of any sort of heavy guitar whether it's loud blues, rock, or metal. A guitar into 50 or 100 watt amp cranked is more or less a different instrument than just playing a guitar into 15 or 20 watts so that it's heard over the drummer.

That feel good story actually made my day!
Maybe all is not lost in this world afterall...
Great job & thanks for sharing

This is the key, and something the vast majority of beginners, hobbyists, and young kids simply don't understand.

It's kind of how everyone knows that one guy who picked up the guitar and never practiced standing up, and learns that it's a completely different ballgame when you're expected to be physical and express yourself that way. Or someone who has only ever played classical nylon string, or cowboy chords on a steel string.

The standard TGP "baja tele into an AC15" guy doesn't understand that it's quite literally a completely different instrument

Playing only direct leads to a horrible, sometimes uncurable disease: bitchpicking.

Yep. It's a fucking disease with young kids.

That'll be the guy that argues with you about it since he has never actually played a cranked amp in a live setting. Pure tan pants mentality....its jUsT t00 LoUd

Those guys - the "open mic night" guys, the "praise and worship" guys, with "grab and go" amps

They honestly don't realize that they are playing a different instrument. Just like a flamenco player, is playing a different instrument

Anyone who plays in those situations (which btw I have experience with all of them) simply don't understand because the guitar isn't the focus of the music. You are an ensemble player in your funk band where your DRRI is loud enough. You can hide behind the other instruments.

If you are playing a 50 or 100 watt amp, you can't hide behind shit.

Well, if you have a 1/2 stack or better, you can hide behind the amp.

It's trickled down into drumming and other instruments too. You know how many bitch hitters I've cycled through on account of the 15 watt amp guys? Somehow zero rim shot or audible back beat has been sold to the average drummer as tasty. What's cool is I went down to Clarksdale and dudes are cranking 50 and 100 watts in a club about the size of an average garage. Drummers hitting with fury. And nobody bitching. A sign on the bar read "earplugs: $1" LOL

Clarksdale sounds like my local scene 🤷‍♂️

Everyone, and I mean everyone, from the death metal guys to the doom guys to the punk guys to the blues guys, all play halfstacks or similar

And every single drummer knows they need to hit rim shots every single hit or they wont get the gig

I'm just glad OP could expose those kids to the way the real gigging world works, so they can have some fun with it.... at least before some venue forces them back into IEMs and baffles of shame

Well, maybe some good will come from this. I've been texting with my buddy this morning, and it sounds like the other bands at the gig are also amp-less. It'll be a real interesting post-gig conversation with the boys. I hope they have fun and wake up those other bands.

Yeah except most of the guys there are using stuff some people here would consider junk gear. Financial realities of MS. It's more about the love of music than love of gear. Squiers and peavey bandits all over the place.

I once told a guy that I thought had potential "hit hard, play good time, and show up on time=gig is yours" and he proceeded to spite me with pitter-patter for 3 hours. He's still bitter I never called him again and he's still without a gig. You can't work with a drummer like that and make anything real.

Let's hope so man! This is one of those things that is insanely valuable experience and knowledge, and even worst case scenario, at least the other bands see how much fun they are having being loud and get curious :ROFLMAO:

That's fine 🤷‍♂️ Those teal stripe bandits sound really good if you replace those godforsaken speakers - peavey shot themselves in the foot with those sheffield speakers.

It's so ironic, they develop a radically good sounding solid state alternative to tubes, and then fucking RUIN it cheaping out on the speakers ROFL

Typical peavey

IMO you just changed someone's life for the better and they will carry that for a long time. What you/me take for granted today is stuff that would've meant a lot to me when I was a kid.

If you really want the kids of today to abandon silent stages, low volume modelers, etc just convince them that such volume restrictions are “oppressive” and uncompromising soundmen are “decibel fascists”. Shouldn’t be difficult…
Except in that case it would be an accurate description. Uncompromising soundmen=dipshits who don't actually know how to run sound.
