I'm looking to replace the monitors I use with my Tascam Portastudio. When I bought my last monitors I set my expectations a little high and my budget a little low. I'm looking for something as neutral as possible and would like to stay in the $3-400 area if possible. I've seen multiple people recommending the M-Audio Bx5 in this price range.

And the Rokit 5".

Does anybody have any suggestions for or against any monitors in this price range?

Thanks!

$400 for the pair? Or per speaker? If you save up another 150-200 per speaker you can afford something much better...

My favs are:

Dynaudio BM MKIII
Focal Alpha
Adam Audio

Maybe tannoy reveals. I would roll those. I learned a long time ago not to buy too cheap in monitors. Been rocking my my KRK v8's for years and they are great. Rockit series I'd stay away from.

Those red jbl's at GC are the best deal around @ 100 each.

I have been using Yamaha HS8's. Great monitors for the price. 4-500 for the pair.

jbl lsr305 are amazing for my $..read some reviews

Although I sold them for Mackies, I think the Behringer Truth 2031A is great for the price.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm taking a look at all of them. I know not to expect the world in that price range but it will be an upgrade over what I'm using now. My budget is flexible to an extent.

I've looked at those a handful of times and actually have them in my Musician's Friend cart along with a few others.

Which Mackies do you have and what do you think of them? The ones I'm replacing are 4" Mackies.

I have some HR824 mk1 and some HR624 mk2 and both pairs are awesome. I also have some 3 or 4"Mackie desktops, but we just use those in my wife's office. They're not very good...but fine for watching vids.

If you're not against buying used. You might be able to get a pair of Yamaha HS80ms or HS8s. If you are against it however, another vote for the Tannoy Reveal 502s.

Good to hear it's not just my ears. Mine are CR4's. They sounded decent for a couple acoustic based songs I did but they sound pretty bad with high gain guitar. Using a Heil PR30 and two SM57's I was trying to figure out why the hell I couldn't get anything close to my JJ's room sound out of these things after spending considerable time on mic placement. I've recorded a few tracks through my computer with the same setup, randomly throwing the mic close to the speaker even, and it sounded fine through the computer speakers or Soundcloud through an actual stereo. At first I was thinking the Tascam may be to blame but I think these Mackies need to go.

I 'monitor' through Rockits KRKs 5, and I actually run AxeFX through Rockits VXTt 6. for $400 you can get a used set of VXTs.
