Looking for the right amp…help

If I wanted a clean/EOB/crunch head that was off the beaten path for a high gain guy, I’d look at a Matchless HC-30 or Vox AC-30, or some kind of good vintage Marshally four holer, like a Suhr SL68. Maybe a Hiwatt clone or something.

"typically gravitating towards high gain modded Marshalls or similar style circuits, I find myself looking for something different."
I love all the Marshall'ish recommendations when he said he's looking for something different.

I think he said he's tried most Marshall variants. I like the Mark and Bad Lander recs
I kept reading the Marshall replies and thought I made a mistake recommending the Boogie.
Then I reread the original post.

Germino’s are very accurate Plexi clones for less money than a bunch of stuff that’s in the same wheelhouse. Charlie Starr gets monster tones out of them, especially with P90’s

I picked up a Boogie Mark VII a few weeks ago. Outstanding amp. The mid gain tones from the 2B mode are just killer! I can also coax an XTC blue channel out if Mark VII mode. The cleans spectacular as well. And then of course 2C and IV modes. The IV used to my favorite mark amp. The VII takes its place. Blows the V out of my he water. My opinion of course. But it certainly fits your description of wants.

I agree. I picked up a VII earlier this summer and it is my favorite channel switcher ever. Epic tones on all 3 channels.

Friedman Runt 50. Great cleans and does the mid gain thing very well. Some might say it only goes up to mid gain without some help.

I stand by my Hiwatt Custom 50 or 100 rec, and also think the fat and percussive raw tone from the simpler preamp of a Plexi is not easy to find in most modded high gain amps. Does it sit in certain similar frequencies? Sure. But does it have that same depth, feel, and response as a jumpered 4 holer? I don't think most do.

I also agree a Mk would be awesome for this. A Mk IIA, IIB, IIC, or III in particular would be a fantastic clean to crunch amp. Just because they have a lot more gain available doesn't mean you have to use it, and makes balancing channel volume and tone settings way easier as well.

Abaddon is my flagship high gain amp. It’s not like anything anyone else has designed as I use FETs, tubes, and opamps all three. You want something modded Marshall that’s different you’re in the right place. I designed my own resonance circuit. And I mean not a copy of what everyone else is doing from a 5150 - it’s a whole new design from scratch that uses a low mid presence and a high mid presence. You’ll find my amps get down and mean business.

This is just a guitar into the amp. No boost. No effects loop.

On the lower gain side this is dialed back for more classic rock but still heavy. No boosts. PCM81 in a passive loop (that’s since been ripped out for my own effects loop design coming soon)
