it's funny...musician type guys hate the band but no matter where I go, if there's a band playing ANY nickelback song, the dance floor is filled with women. Isn't that the point?

I think part of the reason why I like bands like Nickelback is that I'm just not into the Malmsteens and shredders...it just bores me. I'd rather hear a good song with melodies and hooks that you don't forget. I like my music to be simpler and not make me think too much. i think too much with the rest of my life.

Go for it! I don't think it will be as successful as the Bon Jovi gig, but I think it would definately fill a niche and be worth doing. I had been trying to get my band to cover a Nickelback song as a crowd pleaser (I think I was initially pushing "Rockstar").

I'm positive it won't be as successful as my other band...but...if I can make a third of what I make with that band, i'll still be making more money than most bands around here.

I agree 100%. The funny thing about music and the general public/guitar players is that it seems that if a band has really catchy melodic stuff then most people love to bash it or say that the said band is a sellout. Ive watched it happen time and time again year after year and now I just sit back and laugh. I know music is highly subjective but I also find it funny that we live ina world where bands like Slayer are held with such high regard with some people and any band that has a lot of Melody in there music is automatically bad :hys:

(rememeber I said Subjective.. I hate slayer some dig them ;) )

Im not even saying Im a nickleback fan but at least I know that music is subjective. If they have found a formula that works and they are gigging and making millions then AWESOME for them.

Now Sean, since you have a HUGE mouth...can I hear any of the stuff your working on? I mean since Nickleback is so generic, you should have no problem writing a hit...I mean...its really easy right? Just saying ;)

And Sean, I used to sound like you when I was younger. its just now that Im older I can see things from a different perspective ;)

Yep I agree. At 40 I guess I show my age but I loved and grew up with 80's melodic rock and still love it to this day. Real hooks, choruses, bridges, melodic solos and good lyrics. Anyone can yell and scream and play a 7 string tuned to z-flat with so much gain you can't tell true talent from a hole in the wall. Yup, I must be gettin old

+1 in a big way. We did Fight For Your Right last weekend and it looked like there were twice as many people in front of the stage than for any other song. Moral - People like the big hits, they dance and scream, and I like that!!!

Musicians tend to be an opinionated bunch and some think successful bands that dont meet their "elevated standards" are whats wrong with music. Music is art and if moves people somehow then I think its all good because that was what art is meant to do.IMHO it doesnt mater whether or not I as a musician think its "musically bankrupt".

Keep in mind most of these "educated musicians" let their "knolwedge" get in the way of what music is truly for.

Then you get the whole doing music for money, mass pop, blah blah balh making it contrived and not art. I say BS.

I've been a designer for 15 years. I've "sold art" as a print designer right out of school, as an animator for 10 years and now haved moved into jewelry design. Let me tell you I have animated characters and spots I hated but kids have loved. I've designed jewelry that is not my style and seemed like the same ol' same ol' because thats what the client wanted and when it was finished some have cried with joy because it meant something to them. Is because I didnt dig the design and I got paid for it make less artistic? Hell no. I touched someone with what I created and it moved them so I accomplished what most artist really want.

Yeah Ralph. If writing a catchy song was soo easy, how come were all not rich and famous and touring? The thing that a LOT of guitars players forget is that writing a song is what most people in the world value in a musician. ANYONE can sit in a room with a metronome and a guitar and learn, or be shown, to physically know how it works. That person can be 100% devoid of any musical talent. And as much as most of us don't want to admit it we just don't have it in us. I'll tell you, if i could sit down and write albums like Green Day i sure as Hell WOULD do it.

Do it up man! Musicians are a dime a dozen. Successful (playing regulary) and well paid musicians are not. Do what you can and have fun doing it.

I've been in tributes and covers over the years and have heard this all before a thousand times. The one constant I see is that the bashing always comes from those trying to rationalize their own inability to be out there doing it regularly and earning some decent coin in the process--for whatever reason.

In the end, it's a business right?? I'll never find a problem with anyone making money playing music. Sure beats the rat race....

Hey Rich, how about a Foo Fighters thing since I believe they are laying low for awhile so I heard? People love them as well and there hit catalog is much larger than Nicklebacks. Plus their music is fun as hell to play....yeah I said it :gethim:

Sean with the struggling artist approach and view

Um, you could redeem a Nickleback tribute with Big Wreck/Thornley songs.

:D

The bottom line is...everyone is entitled to like whatever they like be it Nickelback or otherwise...no one is forcing anyone to listen or go to the shows. That being said, I would rather staple my balls to my face than listen to Nickelback. :poke:

I am in a Judas Priest Tribute band...we don't play that much because all of us are also in all original bands that play quite a bit. The shows we play are 9 times out of 10 bigger than any of our original bands play and we make more money. We have gigged all over TX so far and always come home with decent cash after traveling expenses. I could see us doing it a lot more next year if we can arrange our schedules. My singer is Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys, Watchtower) and he nails the Halford stuff. I do all the Tipton stuff.

good band but the chicks dig Nickelback so much more around here. I also like Nickelback much more than the foos...but I still like them. Nickelback also has 22 top 40 hits compared to 17 for the foo fighters.

Believe it or not, some of us don't really give a shit whether the 35 year old recent divorcee likes our (somebody else's) music and shakes her saggy cougar tits at us as we play some shit that was tired the second it was released.

Has nothing to do with the fact it's popular, has everything to do with the fact that Nickelback sucks. I like catchy stuff, too; I'm on the record everywhere as liking a ton of popular music, rock or otherwise. I didn't say writing hits was easy, either, nor would I be interested in writing the shit they write for any amount of money if I had to put my name on it. I'm sure they're totally pleased with their lives, music, and success, and I'm happy for them that they've found what they like, and I hope they're musically fulfilled by it. They wouldn't give a shit what I think, and why would they?

I don't care if he does the Nickelback tribute or not, I just said I didn't think it would be successful considering there's no nostalgia factor like Bon Jovi and also that, as a musician, the music would be really boring to play. If you really are only interested in getting women to stand in front of the stage, then I guess it would be OK. But think about it, they don't even give a shit about YOU. They just are glad to hear some shit they heard on the radio because it's familiar, regardless even of how well it's executed. To me that would be the worst.

I'm actually working on a tune at the moment, and once it's done I'll be happy to upload the lead sheet
