Looks like I'll have to get one of those Axe-FXs too

... and I'm not happy about it all, but that seems to be the only reasonable way I can think of to make music in an apartment. I can't stand that digital hi-mid sheen of that unit & I was wondering if anyone tried running their amp's effect send through that thing & if it was any good.

reasonable? reasonable would be save the cash - run a bandit 112 with a G-major and pocket over $1,500

the axe-fx is overrated - and for $2,000 - the above recommendation is much more reasonable at the volumes you will be playing :D

I'm looking for direct recording device, I don't really need a combo to play. If there is something other than the Axe & cheaper, I'd be all over it.

It could be the guys with the clips you've heard, could be your speakers, could be your environment, could be your ears....just rest assured that something, somewhere, isn't dialed in right.

Im curious if youve owned one? With some tweaking the unit is amazing and well worth it for what nbarts needs it for. If youve owned one then great your intitiled to your opnion but ive come to the conclusion that hating the axe fx has become a common thread on this forum, And i think its Bullshit as most of the people that rag on it wont give it the light of day. Its a amazing unit but some people like to read forums and make judgements then to try stuff out themselves.

So far every clip I've heard had that. Believe me, it will only make me happier if it doesn't really have it.

A few people have been impressed with the newest Amplitude release. I've heard some pretty decent clips from guitar rig 4. I played the GR4 demo and although 30 minutes simply isn't long enough to demo the thing, I thought it had potential. Dollars to dollars, they sound as good as the Axe-FX. :)

That said, you can get some nice direct tones with the Axe-FX AND have a really nice effects unit for a real amp.

Alternatively, you can pick up an attenuator that can used as a dummy load with a line out and use a cabinet IR to get your tones. Cheaper than an Axe and it'll feel more like and sound more like your setup. Just food for thought.

Make no mistake, spend 1-2-4-8-12 months tweaking and learning and you'll have it sounded better than any real amp.

I have. Sounds great. :D

ive played one.

tweaking is not what i enjoy for one, secondly it has no balls, punch, thump, rattle the organs in your chest/make you say wow, and 3 - i didnt like the feedback from it - the give and take a regular tube preamp has when moderately cranked. it felt like i was playing a modeler, which ironically is exactly what it is. not only do you have to spend countless hours dialing in modeled tones that sound great, it still "felt" like i was playing my vypyr, only with more menues, more choices, and better modeling tone - but also $1600 more expensive. i dont believe the tonal difference is worth it by a long shot.

why would i make such a strong judgement without playing one? at $2,000 my expectations bar and critiquing level goes sky high. like i said before, it is grossly overrated on this forum. it is good at modeling, and that is all it is good at. nothing else... :)

Couldn't disagree more.

I have some great tube amps, and believe me, the Axe has all the thump, rattle and punch you'd ever want.

99 percent of the things you mention are a volume issue.

As a matter of fact, it flat out SMOKES my best tube amps at low volume.

There's no contest. :D

Wouldn't still own it if it wasn't one hell of a tool.

glad you disagree, its a forum and a free country.

the punch you describe, and the punch i look for, is much much different. low end it has, punch it does not. it both sounded and felt like a modeler.

YMWV. almost everyone here on the forum disagrees with my opinions on amplifiers. its nothing i am not used to. but until you've experienced playing an amplifier that is tight as teen pussy that makes you work for every note - its hard to want anything else. ask killertone about his EP and im sure he will tell you the same - his amplifier is the punch and tight-low end i am talking about. you cannot sit here and tell me the axe-fx can do that in spades, because i have played one and know better. at $2,000 - its an overpriced yet well-designed modeling preamplifier.

at this point each persons views on it are each persons views. i played one - dislike it greatly for its price and what it can do.

I've played a couple of nice amps....I guess we're back to disagreeing.

Just how long did this supposed "tryout" occur I wonder? Did you read the manual?

2-3 months for me. I read the online manual, beginner tips, much of the wiki page, and browsed the Fractal forum before the amp arrived. I tried out, meaning tweaked, tweaked, mixed IRs, and tweaked some more for the whole time I owned it. I agree with just about everything he wrote.

which firmware? the newest one is supposed to be realer than the ones that were supposed to be the realist.
9.0...just three point releases not as real as the latest real, but was still better than real then.
