Been away for a while. I got a job offer in Louisville that was too good to pass on. The last few months have been a whirlwind...anyway, just about settled in. A few questions for those in the know:
Google search doesn't show many music stores, looking for a little help/advice. Do I need to travel to Cincinnati or Indianapolis for better gear selection? What are the good places for live music, small metal/rock shows?

If it`s like most cities it is null/ rock wise/ unless you where kakhi`s and play a fender blues junior.

There is a decent sized Music Go Round, as well as a Guitar Center here in Louisville. They are both on the east side. Lots of smaller shops as well. Definitely No need to go to Indy, or Cinci imho.

You might also want to check out Maxwells House of Music in Jeffersonville (across the river). Fairly small shop, but the brothers that own that are in "Louisville Crashers" arguably one of the most popular cover bands in the area, and they know everyone. Great for networking, especially if you are new to the area and looking for a band.

Regarding shows, there are a ton of bars and small clubs here in Louisville. Lots of venues for original music as well.....and the metal scene is healthy. There are a few larger venues like Mercury Ballroom still doing metal shows. Are you going to Bourbon and beyond this weekend?

Guitar emporium has high end gear if I remember correctly. The odeon, mercury ballroom are good for shows. There a neat jazz bar below a sandwich shop downtown too.

Yes, on Bardstown road.......and just across the street is Doo Wops, where you can rent guitar/amps/PA gear for a show if needed.

Awesome, thanks for the info guys. Should be a fun time, seems like a great place so far. I’m enjoying it.

I just heard about the Bourbon and Beyond show last night. I’m not sure if I’ll make that or not.

You are in a gear whore’s Paradise. There are lots of great shops in Louisville to keep you busy, but you are within a short driving distance of much much more. Each year, there is a guitar show in Nashville and Columbus Ohio. Both worth the drive. There are tons of shops in Cincinnati, and the guitar centers (cincinnati, louisville, and lexington) and Sam Ash have very robust used gear selections. While in Cincinnati, check out Mike’s music. Take a look at his website. Great stuff. Willcutt guitars Is a legendary shop about one hour plus east of you in Lexington. Absolutely worth a drive just to talk to the owner. Guitar emporium in Louisville is great as well. Many many places to see.

Louisville has a great music scene, and please check out Bogart’s in Cincinnati as well as riverbend In Cincinnati. Unfortunately, the toy tiger in Louisville closed years ago. Very tiny club. So many acts there: DIo Dokken, overkill, Motörhead open for a wasp, and type o negative. Sigh. Saw overkill and king diamond at Bogarts in Cincinnati.

There is a record store in Louisville called ear ecstasy. Owned by a guy with the last name Timmons. I note that Andy Timmons has a song or a record (i believe) called ear ecstasy. Has to be more than a coincidence (relative?) I believe Andy is from down the road in Evansville. Kind of cool

Congrats!

I just looked, and ear ecstasy is closed. Oh well

Btw, gear man dude (youtube) works at guitar emporium

Wow, nice write up man, appreciate that. I will definitely get out and check out the surrounding areas. I've heard of Willcut Guitars, might have bought from them in the past, not sure.

I can't help you on the gear but the Metal scene in Louisville is pretty awesome imo. I love playing up there. Metal Mondays at Highlands Tap Room can get pretty fucking crazy. We've played it a few times when we needed a Monday show and always had a blast. Savage Master, Stonecutters, Blind Scryer and Stagecoach Inferno are some bands to check out from the area.
