Hey folks, Going to update the lighting in the mancave. Right now it's a ceiling fan in the middle, with two light fixtures that are kinda craptacular looking IMHO.

Here's a pic:

Any suggestions for better lighting? I'm not going to change anything else in the room right now, just the two light fixtures and maybe the ceiling fan. The lights just kinda look like old whorehouse lamps to me. :)

Yeah I got a suggestion, stop flauting your super cool mancave in front of us smucks that have to deal with cement walls and listening to toilet water rushing down with turds while the cat is taking a dump 10' feet from you.

Recessed lighting in the ceiling with a dimmer Pete, they have UL approved cans that can be installed in pre existing ceilings

if you use the same room for recording i'd try to stay away from dimmers and florescent lighting as both can be sources of rf interference.

I would go with some track lighting, you can point where you want and have some nice diffuse lighting.

Yeah track using the boxes from the existing lights would be the easiest and just run them straight down that centerline. You can adjust the cans where you want the light.

Hey, I already said that! Why are you stepping on my great suggestion and making it your own??! :gethim:

You smell of elderberries and cat turd!

Your idea is an easier option and typical Canadian do it quick so it is not cutting in on beer drinking and seal tossing

My cat blew me out of there the other night

I like a mixture of fluorescent and incandescent, from different fixtures. I'll also have to second the motion for track lighting...that would be awesome to bounce some light directly off your guitars. Whatever you do, I would definitely suggest multiple fixtures, be they fixed or movable or a mixture of the two.

I once threw a seal 17.3 meters.

You show that cat who's boss...when he comes downstairs crank up the Marshall.

who needs real lights just get a few colored spotlights aimed at one of these suckers in the middle...

Watch which dimmers you use. Crappy dimmers cause all sorts of noise. There are good ones out there that can be very quiet. Spend the extra money...

I got one of these for my mancave:

Ikea. 3 pinpoint halogen spotlights. Kinda like track lighting, but cheap as hell. $25 bucks for the fixture, and looks very nice, clean, and modern.

track lighting with a mix of halogen spot lights and halogen lamps with a wide spread. also upwards pointing lights in the corners of the room. I love dimmers but as someone else pointed out they WILL cause noise.

LEDs would be quieter, wouldn't they? Hm.... and I wouldn't have to change bulbs very often either.

It really depends how much you wanna spend. The best is a large quantity of low wattage track lights if you can afford it. Lighting is the best decor, your room is gonna look great after you're done.

I like the track lighting suggestions. That is the way I would go.

One thing to keep in mind. Ceiling fans are nice to keep the air moving. Even in a basement, with amps running and people playing the room can heat up. So keep some airflow in mind....

Check with your local power company and see if they are offering any incentives for the upgrade/installation of certain lighting types. For example, some areas of PA (those served by Penelec) are eligible for rebates if they install T-8 fluorescents with low power factor ballasts...essentially enough to finance ~50% of the materials.

Definatley track lighting on ceiling...then get some of that rope lighting and go around the entire room for that extra "coolness" factor when the track lights are off
