Hi,like the title says i need to know who of this amps is better, overall,im playing guitar like 3 years now,im going to start to study music in a college and i save money for like 2 years for my first tube amp,i see a lot of reviews in internet A LOT!!,videos, and forum searching, and my final desicion is between those amps, i cant really afford another amp in maybe another 5 years, and i need something is going to be super versatile and overall better.

Im really into the 80s metals bands (i love that guitar tones),modern metal(avenged sevenfold ,children of bodom),a lot of instrumental(mostly joe satriani),trash metal like megadeth, and some hard rock like guns n roses.I know its a wide range of tones ,so i really need a answer.

I cant test the amp by myself because im living right now in mexico and the prices are so high and its nearly imposible to find those amps., a friend of mine going to get the amp for me in the United States.

Thanks

Engl SE... no contest. I really don't like the JMVs... not even the "new & omproved" JS version. The only negative on the SE are mid-gain crunch tones... but for your wants, that shouldn't be an issue.

I think you don't want to ignore just a regular JVM410H as they're easily available used. I think you could still get all you need out of it and it would probably save you over a $1000 to getting the JS version new. Personally I'd rather get a 6 knob JCM800 and some pedals but it depends on whats available. I have always wanted to try an ENGL Savage 120 though.

Seriously?

The Satch model sounds nothing like the regular JVM. The JVM amp itself is not a bad amp either.

Different strokes.....but to say the Engl is hands down better is a stretch at best. The Engl's that I have tried do one thing well. The JVM Satch does many things well. I'd rather have something more versatile, personally. But then....everyone has their likes and dislikes.

The Satch is a great deal if you buy it up in Canada.....I got mine about 700$ cheaper than it is currently priced in the U.S.

I like the Engl stuff but imho the tones he is after are all in the Marshall camp of tones not the ENGL camp at all. I have yet to try the Satch JVM yet but the regular one would nail those tones to a tee.

I don't think any of Engl amps are worth half their price based on their tones and build quality.

I'd go Marshall all the way.

If you really "need" to spend $4k on an amp, get the Koch Supernova.

FWIW if you're looking to spend JVM prices... I'd say go Mesa Roadster or Road King. For my $ the Road King is the best amp on the market. Yes I am a fan boy and yes I have one.

I just can't get over the ENGL tone (not going to address build quality). I have owned a Powerball, and spent considerable time with the SE. I just feel like they all sound sterile, flat and just generally lack character. The one ENGL I felt sounded pretty good was the Blackmore. I have no idea how they justify their price-point in the marketplace. That being said...To each his own. I know the ENGL tone and voicing has plenty of fans. They just do not work for me.

This was the problem I had with it as well. Again though, we all hear things differently and there is no right or wrong to what one perceives as being great.

That being said, I love the Marshall Satch amp. For me and to my ears, it does many things very, very well. The noisegate, shift and three modes per channel makes it that much more enjoyable and a huge variety of tones.

For me as well....the price of it up here was absolutely perfect for what I was looking to spend.

I would go with the Marshall jvm410hjs. I think Marshall made significant improvements on that model and corrected most of the quibbles I had with the original.

Only engl I would get is the Blackmore.

Its only 1 thing that i dont know how good its the marshall ,in modern metal ,like nightwish, children of bodom and those high gain tones...

If you want Children of Bodom, then you must get the ENGL SE.
Have a look...

FYI: That's actual EMG Studio's in house demo rig (ENGL)....Ironically, his preference is Marshall amps and Lee Jackson rack gear for his main tones...That is my understanding.

For the tonal range you're going for, JVM over the SE.
If you want an Engl that's versatile, try to find a used Engl Straight (discontinued for many years). They're sometimes difficult to find, but they're totally worth looking into.

Alexi recently got endorsed by ENGL and has started to use the SE. He said in an interview that the Lee Jackson kept breaking on him when he was on tour and it was starting to become a pain to keep fixing. One last thing...anyone who says marshall has better buiild quality than ENGL seriously has not owned a marshall (Newer ones not 70s and 80s ones)
