Mercyful Fate Tone Appreciation Thread

Saw the king a couple years ago and he was sounding great. I had heard he’d been using the backup singer to pad his vocals but it sounded to me like she was just doing the harmonies off the record and the King could still hit the high’s just fine.
Nothing wrong with that, at least he isn't using tracks like most. He's still wanting to put in a " live" show.

Anyone know what the amp was on in the shadows? Maybe a single coil into JCM800. Laney maybe? The perfect chewiness for those riffs.

I think Shermann used TS9's into a Superlead. He's been known to use HSS Strats and Denner Flying V's. I believe Denner used 800's.

I always thought that Judas Priest's Stained Class album was the catalyst for King to do his thing with Mercyful Fate. The similarities are undeniable. The song Stained Class especially sounds like MF.

Stained Class is an exceptional album. A hidden gem in JP's catalog, for sure.

Thought I'd share this one cause it's a classic from way back when they started the band.

Can you imagine the hate they must have gotten for this song? Hahaha

Tone is standout on that too. Whoever produced these albums had a good ear.

The Uninvited Guest is a song that should be a classic

Yep, Les Binks and Kim Ruzz both showcase a very particular swing groove in their drumming... Like a jazz-meets-southern-rock infusion to metal. One of my fave Priest albums and Stained Class one of my fave songs.
Halfords "Live Insurrection" version of the song is tight and heavy AF too.

Your assessment is spot on. I would also point to "Saints In Hell." I am sure a young "King" was listening! :)

Live Insurrection was Halford at his peak, IMO. They totally knocked Beyond The Realms Of Death out of the park as well. And the lead was SPOT-ON. Every Halford fan should own that album.
