To be honest any Tube Screamer makes the bass tighter than a tube change.

This. EL34's will change the characteristics of the mids and top end more. A slight reduction in bass but very slight. It's enough of a change in my T-Verb I wish I could have two amps just to have the change in sound ready to go. But I do think for all the sounds a T-Verb can do I've found 6L's the best overall choice. Love playing surf rock on the clean channel with the reverb up.
Exactly.....The Tremoverb Clean and Blues channel sound great with the 6L6. The Red and Orange have a deeper bass that you can tighten up with a Tube Screamer.

I ordered a quad of JJ KT77’s from Eurotubes. I’ve liked those in every amp I’ve tried them in, so we’ll see how they are in a Dual.
I ran these for awhile. They have aggressive highs and more bass than a EL34. Sounded great for the point of breakup stuff and highgain.

Currently I have some NOS GT6L6S Slovakian and GT6L6 GE USA a friend bought in the 90's in my Tremoverb that sound super fat with smooth highs.

All this stuff is very subjective. Very dependant on the rest of the rig and what styles you play.

When I had my Rev F Recto I played it against my friends Rev C Recto. I liked my Rev F more. The C is super bright to my ears.

That said Mike B can easily mod to anything for cheap.

I keep hearing "Mike B can mod it" and I wanted to find out how I could get in contact with him since I am looking at getting a second Mark IV but I wanted to see what are some of the possible mods for them.

This thread is of interest to me.

But my new to me Rev F Triple takes the cake...it's very close to the 2 early Rev G Triples I owned but with more warmth and brightness, and the clarity is a big step above the G Triples I owned, both of which were in the 4000 range serials.
How can an amp be warm AND bright at the same time?

Just messing around a bit but I was thinking of starting a thread for the names and descriptions we give to tone :)
Do you think warm=dark? I don’t. Warm to me is a pleasing midrange that isn’t honky. Brighter is more sweep with the presence and treble knobs, vs the other amp. The G Triples had less upper mids, more lower vs the F triple that has its midrange centered a bit higher on the frequency scale.
That’s my interpretation anyway. YMMV.
I typed up a big response that is now gone

I don't feel like retyping it. I WILL create a Tone definition thread soon.

Safe to say I prefer warm and cold and bright and dark descriptions. You could have a bright bass tone just like a you could have warm treble. That's all I was getting at. That's why I had a hard time wrapping my head around warm AND bright tone. All good. We can catch up on this later :D

Yeah - I prefer EL34s in my Recto  Carry on
No worries!

I 'almost' bought a friends 78 2204 a few yrs back...that was the definition of "warm" to me, it had these creamy mids that just popped out..a couple amps haunt me, that I passed or sold/trade. That was one. He wanted my Jubilee combo in trade.

Hey there. I asked Mike B what he can do to a 2 channel Recto, and he told me the only thing worth doing was modding it to the original C version. He felt that you can get the F tone by just using the EQ. He quoted me 180 I think, then add shipping to/from and any caps that need replacing.
This was about 18 months ago. But, Mike is so cool you could probably talk him into just about anything.

Mike modded R2 on my IVa to try & make it usable and honestly it still sucked. I wouldn't bother modding a IV. Now a IIB with the loop mod, that's a different story.

I’ve called Mike B a few times and got voice mail, and I left a message last Monday. I haven’t heard back from him. Is he usually hard to get ahold of? I’d like to ship my Triple for the C mod this week.

I know that before the COVID situation, they were only open Mon-Thurs. Not sure if that's been adjusted; I know that usually you'll call and talk with Gary, who will ask what you want to have done..then he'll give you an RMA number after he takes your info. Then he will patch you through to Mike, or Gary will have Mike call you back. But, call customer service first and ask for Gary or ask that you talk to someone about modding your amp.

Mesa was shut down for the virus. I haven't heard if they are back open. If you hear what modification are available for the Mark IV post it in this thread. I would be interested. My IV needs the capacitors replaced. The amp is 30 years old. My Tremoverb and Heartbreaker need it too. All three are probably going to Mesa.

The first time I called, I did talk to Gary. I told him I was calling to talk to Mike B about a mod, so he put me through to his extension, where I left a voicemail. Never heard back from him, so I called again, got voicemail, but didn’t leave another. I’ll try again on Monday.
