I know the Boogie sounds great and I see nothing but great reviews on the EVH however I played a EVH 50wt combo a few months ago and it was horrible. It was a fuzzy, SS sounding mess.

I have to believe there was something wrong with it.
I'm leaning towards the Boogie.
Thoughts?

For me at least, Boogie. Hands down. I've had them both and found the 50 watt 5150 III to be super sterile and compressed. Not my thing at all.

Also had them both and found the EVH to be buzzy and oversaturated. Love the smooth lead tone in the mesa and would pick it over the EVH.

As a present owner of both I think it comes down to what sort of tone you are after. They're vastly different amps. If you're running the gain too high on the EVH it can certainly become buzzy.

My MKIV is the only Mesa I really regret selling... Never had a 50W 5153. Spent a little time with a 100W, which was being offered in trade for my MKIV, and wasn't blown away.

I've own the IV and currently own the 5150 III 100 watt. I find that if you don't put some volume on the 53 it can be a bit harsh in the high end. Once you get the volumes above 9:00, I don't find it hash at all. The EVH is definitely thicker sounding that the IV... at least in my experience.

I have owned a few MKIV's and Currently own a 5153 50 watt head, the EVH's are more voiced towards the recto's, basically the red channel is damn close to the boogie red channel with a lot more compression and way too much gain. For awhile i was in love with my 5153 and I still do love it, but lately I have gone back to playing a triple rec reborn that I picked up. I do love compression but not all the time and it is just easier for me to use a recto with a boost and cut the boost if I do not want to much compression.

If I do play my 5153 I keep the gain just under mid point (noon) on the dial on the red channel and I do not use a boost except on leads. To be fair I have never played my 5153 in a band or gotten it really loud, but I do love it for a bedroom amp at low volumes.

The MKIV will have a lot more mids and is a different beast, if you prefer Marks over Recto's then I say stay away from the EVH unless you plan on using channel 2 all the time.

Whenever I've tried the 5153 I've thought to myself, "Shit, why bother with this when you can buy a Boss Metalzone pedal".

I had the evh 50w it was great for the first few months.. But then I started to hate it. It was like the red channel was nothing more than as distortion pedal.

Love the Mark IV, great amp. Love my little 5153 50 watt also. The secret to me is boosting the blue channel. Just a fatter, less compressed sound than the red channel. I also feel the matching EVH cabs really sound best with the 5153 50 watt. I have a bunch of Boogie 1x12's and 2x12's as well as two EVH 2x12's. It's just a different beast matched with the EVH cabs, which are tuned for the head specifically.

Ironic.... every time I've played a Mark IV I thought the same thing.

Newbies to the 5150III spend too much time on channel 3, for that instant gain gratification. The magic is channel 2, especially boosted if you want higher gain. Channel 1 and 2 are basically a different amp than channel 3. Different gain sequence. Listen to the recent live vids fellow member Victim5150 recently posted. You can't call that distortion pedal tone.

I gotta go with the Mark here I just was never super impressed with the wannabe EVH Fender 5150's I like the new ones features. But I feel like a 5150 or a 6505 has better tone for less money. (IMHO)
