I tend to think ANY genre of music where the purveyors of said genre dress up/use make up/stick to gimmicks and adhere to a strict stereotype are cheesy/silly.

And that can go FAR beyond black metal.

Not just silly, but flat out hilarious.

Sadly, I like some of it! I just can't look at any of it or I feel like an idiot!

I'm actually fine with the garb, subject matter, etc. I'm not fine with the mixes that sound like goddamn Helen Keller was behind the board. That isn't evil, it's terrible.

Some is worthwhile to me though.

I know they get endlessly ripped on for being sellouts, posers, etc, but Dimmu Borgirs 'Death Cult Armageddon' disc flat out rips.

Now I'll wait patiently for a sub-genre fanatic to yell "that that isn't black metal!!"

I don't think I'll ever warm up to that style of vocals but the guitar Riffs and playing is sick!

Btw Ralphie, I think it is cool that you listened to this and gave it a chance. I understand the vox aren't everyone's cup o tea, but the riffing cannot be denied!!
I actually love stuff like this and the riffing most definitely cannot be denied!!. The way that I see it is that there are guitar players in this day and age who are doing some of the sickest rhythm and lead playing and I know that it would take me a decade to be able to do some of the stuff they are doing :hys:

I hate it when guys my age shun stuff like this just because they are close minded. I Don't mind if someone doesn't like a particular style or genre but I do hate it when I clearly know that someone doesn't like something because they are being close minded.

With that said, I just know that for me, I don't really like that style of vocals although I think they are WAY better then the pig/growl vocals that were really popular at one time :D
Hell, I can honestly say that I don't mind this style of vocals as much as I used to, so maybe there is hope for me.....MAYBVE :D

On another note, I still listen to Scar Symetry and I am wowed by the guitar work. Per nilssonis BADASS :D

Oh, and a fun fact for all the "Cookie Monster" haters out there:

More people have blown their voice out singing like Freddie Mercury than doing the Cookie Monster impression. Singing and screaming are literally the same thing. The only difference is that you can practice singing in the bedroom of your apartment without having the cops called. When you get to the gig, however, you realize that singing in your room to Van Halen doesn't help you sing on the top of your lungs. Pipe dream ruined.

The only difference between singing and screaming is which set of vocal chords you use. Hitting pitch with a scream, however, is one of the most difficult things a vocalist can do. Plus, just about every great singer digs into the grit of using both sets of chords for a little extra oomph. Metallica, Slayer, Testament, and all the great original metal bands had singers that used both sets of vocal chords

It's one thing to say you don't like it, but never say we're not talented or aren't musicians. Screamers are every bit as talented as any other singer out there.
I disagree. Yeah, 'screamers' that take it professionally use an enormous amount of skill, but for the common bedroom musicians, that isn't true. I can walk down the street and grab a handful of decent people who can do harsh vocals, but I probably wouldn't find one capable singing voice. It seems like all the younger dudes are into yelling in bands, and rarely do we find good vocalists in upcoming metal bands.

It's probably not all that intentional, but having a harsh vox is a huge perk for making songwriting easier.. the vocalist or lyricist only needs to worry about phrasing, and the rest of the band doesn't have to worry about playing over, or being restricted to, a given melody / key.
