Ok so I know I might be late to the party I just read this article http://www.g66.eu/articles/890-metallica-backstage is this true  I mean I know they have used like every amp under the sun except maybe Genz Benz so it doesn't suprise me and they probably need more practicle setup and all that overseas touring can get expensive. I doen't really care truthfully because I tell every bass player I know to just uy the MXR M80 and all you hear in the audience anymore is digital preamp signal but please tell me thier power amps are tubed :scared: They did use ADA's in the 80's and into the 90's so its fine just a tad bummed I think I just hope by the time they tour the U.S again they have perfected it. Man no mesa stuff in thier live rigs at all I was hoping they would use Mark V's secretly ;)

But I think this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6fYBhovpQ0 sounds more powerful then this

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... on+battery

I know its a bad comparison but I am convinced these guys could sound bad ass with crate stealthes and carvin Mts classics because they play so well

They haven't used all that much stuff really. Marshalls early on, then the mark 2c+ for years, then a triaxis and diezel VH4. I don't think kirk actually used Randall, I think that was just a marketing deal.

He had the Randall stuff off stage in the practice room just to warm up from what I have seen.. these guys prob figure nobody really notices and that less gear to drag around means more $$$$$$ in their pockets. Clearly they don't have enough money already and need to bore us not only with sloppy performances but with shit tone.

I remember seeing Genz Benz cabs in a video somewhere lol

I have seen Het with friedmans, wizard amps, theres a 5150 in some kind of monster and he uses the krank krankenstien on death Magnetic. Kirk has tons of marshalls and I bet when an amp comes in they have probably tried out atleast three other amps made by the same company. Kirk did use Randall my boss who runs a local sound and lighting company who knows Big Mick told me that the randall was only used live like 10 times then they sold it to a guitar center haha. Because it didn't have all the externel switching kirks rackmount rectifiers had or something. I honestly would't have believed him but there was a Kirk Hammet randall that said "used my kirk Hammet" on it forever and they wanted like 4,000. Kirk also has that randall with like a hunred knobs on it tho they won't help im play better hahah jk Love the mighty Metallica and I don't care if thier using line6 spider 2's and they are 60 I will be at that show :)
But I am wondering do we all really need our rigs or just a good preamp and some power   :gethim:

the talk with their tech and managers probably went like this:
James: so what's up with this fractal I keep hearing about..
tech: oh jamez you have to try it out...amazing modeling technology that gets you in the ballpark of your awesome tones
james: fine, we'll try it, y the fuck not, tried pretty much everything under the sun
management: what's the financial impact?
tech: awesome! double awesome! it's lighter than normal gear so you mr manager will be happy that our shipping costs will go down....jamez, to you that means more $ in your pocket....to me, wohooo less back problems
james: my tones been shitty, can't get much worse....$$$ is always good...LETS DO IT!

Kirk and james' tone has absolutely no balls to it since they switched to the axe fx's. It's a very clear tone but it's more of a rock tone than a heavy metal tone. I thought their tone was good on the "through the never" live album, but after that, nope... it's like they are putting more and more mids in there tone, and less and less gain... But it's not giving them a better mix, it's just making them sound less powerful.

I liked James' live tone best when it was 100% Boogie. Mesa Mark's or Tri-axis into Boogie Power-amp.

Emphasis on "rock band". They are still a good live act for a bunch of old guys.

You'd think with all the high end stuff they have they'd have a freakin great guitar tone, but it turns out that money can't buy you tone....

when he was supposed to be playing randall there were tons of pics of him playing fortins 6 channel monster.

Is Metallica even still relevant ;)
Nope, not to me. They shit the bed a long time ago. If you're into metal, there's a million bands that smoke them. They are a mere shell of their former selves. Hetfield's voice sucks, Kirk's leads suck, Lars sucks, their tone sucks and THEY SUCK.

Sheesh so much Metallica hate I am a huuuuuge Metallica fan and it is great we can examine them with the magnifying glass that is the internet but it'll never be 1986 again or for you newer fans 1998 my favorite era I mean they're over 50 & play like bad asses lol enjoy it and xzryabx that's hilarious

They use the Axe rigs for all overseas shows and some small, one-off performances.

Kirk has used his signature randall RM100KH and modules since 2007 or so. He always had 2 in his live rig until the big 4 NY show in 2011. After that, the Randall/Fortin came into the picture. The rack mount Dual Rectos were/are still there. The RM100KH replaced the Triaxis portion of his rig while the Recto stayed. The Fortin/Randall replaced the RM100KH and again, the Rectos stayed. The only time he uses the RM100KH now are backstage to warm up on, as mentioned above.

They do have Mark Vs in the studio and have for quite awhile actually. Obviously they have a ton of gear but the boogies always do get some good use.

Popularity wise yes but other metal bands right now blow their doors off and Metallica's success is still from what they did 20-30 years ago. Since the Black album they have sucked ass.
