I know Metallica still fills the arena and still brings it.

Next time they come to Atlanta I will be there, again.

But on tone? I have a shit ton of gear and can get most all of it dialed in to sound like me. Which is pretty hilarious at the end of the day.

But I'm happy with my Rhodes Gemini and MKIIC. I don't know all the new shit and don't even care!

It's just dumb kids ragging on the band, so who cares. I still love metallica and always will, despite their lack of creativity these days. Musicians get old and they inevitably lose that creative drive that once made them great. Happens to almost everyone, and we blame them for this...? They still put on a great show and probably still will until they are in their 60's...but they really should re-evaluate their tone a bit. James and Kirk are on a bit of a "more mids" kick these days. There's nothing wrong with scooping your tone if the outcome of it is a killer tone, and it still has enough cut to work in a mix. Same with boosting the mids, but it's really a very un-metal tone they have got in the last year or two.
Dumb kids? I'm 44 and had K.E.A. when it came out in '83. I watched them transform from the mightiest band in metal, into a calculated, commercial product. And Metallica didn't get "old" and lose their creative drive. They got rich, bloated and complacent. Most of those bands I mentioned above from Metallica's generation (Exodus, Machine Head, Overkill, Testament) are not only still creativity driven, but they're on top of their games. Love them all you want, that's cool and it's your right. Just like it's mine to hate them openly on a public forum.

yup
i agree totally

He had the Randall stuff off stage in the practice room just to warm up from what I have seen.. these guys prob figure nobody really notices and that less gear to drag around means more $$$$$$ in their pockets. Clearly they don't have enough money already and need to bore us not only with sloppy performances but with shit tone.

Axe FX is the shit, don't get me wrong, I just don't like that many options. One day you have a good tone, the next day you're questioning it. You know what I'm talking about. Too many damn buttons and knobs and I end up knob turning more than playing.

As for Metallica?
Don't forget the lacklustre songs.

Same for Megadeth these days, and I was a hardcore MD fan for years. I've moved on to better music now. At least Exodus and Slayer are still making some decent music. Anthrax is doing some cool stuff as well.

Who cares if they play on gorilla amps until they deliver a great show with great sound?
If you go to a gig, enjoy it and don't be a dick complaining about "sample rate issues and AD/DA conversion jitter"

I saw Threat Signal at a local club 6 months ago. Both players used axe. It was for the consistency in tone every night running direct, sounded great out front. Talked to them after the show and each have their own collection of tube amps, and they aren't going anywhere.

I think after listening a little more the ax fx are not that bad I prefer a real amp but I don't have 500 plus in ear moniters molded for my ears and need to travel all over the world to play in front of 100,000's of people lol

Does that Axe-Fx have a pitch correction effect that can help Kirk with his nerveous sounding squirrelly vibrato? :D

it's not nervousness it's the shakes from not doing cocaine :D for the last 10 or 15 years i kid i kid

I thought hey field was going back to his old guitar and amp, guess not.

And as far as to what is relevant, who cares. It's not like metal with actual vocals is relevant, but enough with the Cookie Monster vocals already. Just get your cookie and shut up. :)

To answer your question does it matter what artist are using no it doesn't. But its fun and part of the hobby I think its fun to know and research it and try to get those tones especially Metallica's :)

Yeah I don't chase tones any more. With today's gear I can get any tone I want. I'd prefer my own tone anyway. You can assimilate similar tones with different gear. People get too wrapped up with that bs....alot of tone is in the fingers of the artist. And sorry if this offends you but all the fanboy stuff gets ridiculous. But have fun..

I've never tried the Axe, but all I know is their live tone got even shittier once they started using it, and Devin Townsend's 5150 tones are SOOOO much better than his Axe tones. There are a few other examples I know of bands tones going to shit once they start using them, but I can't think of them right now. Been a long day at work haha.

I don't dislike Devin's tones on his last few albums BUT his best tones to me were on Ocean Machine and Accelerated Evolution. And Devin used the Axe-FX Ultra on Deconstruction and the Axe-2 on Ziltoid 2 and I think on Epicloud. To me there's no difference at all really in the tones between what he did with the Ultra vs Axe-2.

The AxeFX is a no brainer if you're a touring & producing musician. I mean, the logistic & production benefits of the AxeFX are undeniable really. I almost don't see how any professional guitar player can be without one.

Devin Townsend's best tones were on SYL "Alien", by far! That was a 5150 blended with a Dual Rectifier with el34's. The production on that album is amazing! it's so dark and evil sounding too. It's my fav extreme metal album.

I just hope that by the time they record a new album and go on tour around the world, that they get their tones sorted out.

I wanna hear some Crunch.
