MGL50HG high gain amp, a tribute to the great modded Marshall tones of the ‘80’s. This is a single channel master volume amp w/ three 12AX7 preamp tubes and a pair of EL34 power tubes. All tube preamp circuit, no extra gain from solid state or diode clipping circuits. The focus of this amp was: lots of useable gain without any need to add pedals. Singing lead tones with plenty of sustain. Also great clarity and note definition when playing chords so every note is heard, chunky low mids and a presence in the upper mids that makes for effortless "Superlead" like harmonics that jump off the strings. Much attention was focused on the importance of sounding great at low home volumes, and all of this without compromising the tone and feel. This is beast of an amp with plenty of attitude and a blast to play! As with all of our amps, much time and effort have gone into the choice of components. No generic kit parts used. Aluminum chassis is made locally and then goes to another local shop for powder coating and screen printing. My good friend Guy Harvey does the complete in-house builds including making the turret boards and each amp is built to order. All amps come with NOS tubes.
Build Specs:
The one on the back labeled “Voicing” determines which tap of the ohms selector the negative feedback circuit goes to.
Up position labeled “Modern” goes to the 8 ohm tap which is stock on a 50w Marshall amps.
Down position labeled “Classic” goes to the 16 ohm tap and has a warmer, browner and more compressed tone and feel.
Switch on the front to the left of the input jacks switches between 2 different resistor values for preamp tube bias which effects the gain & EQ structure.
Down position is stock metal panel JMP or JCM800.
There's a slight bump in the mids and is tight and focused.
Up position is a Plexi value with a more even and sweeter EQ with a bit less mids and fuller bottom end.
