For double micing on a budget, I like the SM58 and the Senn E609 together. Check out some of the cheaper Audix stuff too. The i5 was a cool mic.

Did you mean sm57? the 58 is a vocal mic. I have never tried the 58 so I might be missing out on something.

I'm looking at a Fathead, to get my foot in the door of ribbon mics on the cheap. When you mic a cab, do you put the ribbon mic in the same places/positions as you would a dynamic like the 57, or do you back it off, or...? Do you have to be careful of how loud the amp is? How hard is it to damage a ribbon element with a high SPL?

It's not the SPL that kills a ribbon mic, it's the air buffeting the thin metal ribbon. That's what I've heard anyhow. As for placement, not exactly. I would experiment for where they sound the best because if you are comparing it to a 57, they are very different mics with very different sounds.

The 57 has a low end roll off at around 150Hz (equivalent to a guitar's in standard tuning's D string) and a hyped up high midrange. This is why if you put it near the center of the cone it sounds thin and harsh. You move the mic to a darker part of the cone so that the cone's EQ curve strikes a balance point with the mic's EQ curve. In so many words. Many people angle their 57's slightly away from the dustcap to shunt some of the brightness.

A mic like the fathead is much more transparent and has a wider more even frequency response throughout the mids and a warm high end roll off. If placed in the same place that a 57 sounds good, it would be woofy and dark sounding. For starters you do want to place the mic a little further away than a 57. I've heard the mic placed dead center cone both 3 inches and 3 feet away and in both places I thought it sounded good. Another clip by the same person was placed an inch or two off center and sounded more full bodied and darkened a bit.

I use a 57 & 609. Neither sound very good on their own, but sound good together.

+1

I use this combo and I am very happy with it.

Oops, I mean SM57. Pain in the ass typing with a possibly broken finger, heh. Thanks for pointing that out.

I've had some interesting results using a Beta 58 on guitars and drums for "odd" tones.

I think there is a difference between what "works" and what is best for this or this sound. I have used a 57 to get a decent very usable guitar sound, it works pretty easy on a guitar cab. But I don't think thats the best mic for most applications.

The funny thing is, for me anyway, I like or love gear till I hear something I like better. From a guy who has made a lot of records, you guys should try Beyerdynamic ribbons, they are amazing on guitars and make other mics, mics that I thought were great sound a little anemic. The best part is you can get them used for $300 on eBay, they are sturdy little f**kers too.

and by your clips alone, I think you know what your talking about

Not to hijack, but what are you guys using for live use? I have used a 57 for years and never gave it much thought. I have used a e609 on occasion but typically use the 57. ...Amp is an SLO through Marshall with greenbacks.

I did the same thing, 57's have good mids and cut live, plus they always work. I never really tried anything else while we were on the road except a Senn 609, and went back to 57's

I like odd. I will have to try that. Good luck with the finger.
