So I have a 4x12 with Vintage 30's 8ohms and another with 70/80's 8ohms and I'm thinking of mixing the 2. Yea the 70/80's aren't the best but their a nice neutral speaker and better than the G12M-70 so you can't say they're the worst.

But before I spend a whole day doing this would you think there would be any benefit to this? I'm going to start running this as a full stack live but I figure if I X them in each cab I would have a closer consistent sound when I use just a halfstack at smaller venues. And I don't have the cash to but 4 new speakers.

The amp is an Laney AOR 100 and backup is a Krank Rev1

So what you say?

I guess it is up to you but I don't think it is worth the effort honestly.

PS: Cool avatar.

Thank you and thank you.

I know a speaker swap isn't an all day or difficult swap, but if there's no real benefit like one speaker helping another with lows or mids, highs ect ect then no real point of doing it.

I think a LOT of Celestions get a bad rap just because they're in crappy particle board speaker cabs...Laney, Peavey, and other lower end cabs are NOT the same as a good Marshall or Mesa etc...cab. I don't hate 65s, 70s, 75s, 80s, 85s, 90s, or 100s...but it seems most people only like 30s and down...

sometimes you get interesting results with speakers you wouldnt normally mix. i say go for it and see how it sounds.

i had g12m70 speakers in my rivera ported cab, and with ANY tube amp, it sounded lifeless, and anemic and weak (it was wired correctly too). i put in an elite 80 and a UK V30 and it sounds unbelievable.

for what it was worth, the g12m70 was my practice rig with a solid state head...and it sounded passable.

If he didn't already have 2 cabs I might agree but my thinking is the days he only needs 1 - 4x12 cab, which TBH should be most, then you'll have 4 Vintage 30s vs 2.

Another idea is sell the 1 4x12 with the 70/80s and use that money to fund either better speakers altogether (aka Creambacks, Splawn Small Blocks, Scumbacks, etc) or maybe a really good 2x12.

I actually don't have a problem with 70/80's, our other guitarist has gigged with them for years and no ill words about his tone and he's using a clean amp and a Metal Muff for gain. With my first post I just wanted to acknowledge that there are better speakers out there, but fundage isn't available for them.

But yes some quality cabs are in my future, I'm looking at Emperor and Atlas cabs at the moment.

Now that makes me take a second thought on it. Maybe an hour worth my time that could benefit. I just heard mixed feelings on mixing speakers and if to do them in an X pattern or top/bottom

Never heard of the Elite 80, is that like a Lead 80? Which I thought is the predecessor to the 70/80.

We're actually playing more larger and outdoor venues as of late and with other bands being volume pushers as well it's nice not to sound weak. Even mic'd the air that moves and the feeling the front of the crowd gets always is nice to hear from the feedback after shows. But yea another idea was sell it and get a 2x12. Problem is if I wanted over $100 I need to retolex it and get some casters. Just not worth it IMHO.

I like this idea the best.

I have tried the 7080's and no offense those actually may be the worst speakers ever made

However I would still try it. What is it going to hurt? Worst case it sounds like shit and then you sell like 311splawndude recommended.

Best case you may get lucky and it is a good mix, I know in some applications V30 can be a bit harsh so you never know until you try.

Might as well try it..its fun to swap/x pattern speakers just to see. I've settled on g12 65s as the speaker that's best for me and my 2 Marshall's, works well with the deliverance too. You might want to try putting some insulation like carpet padding inside your cab, it might improve and focus the sound better. Stuff is pretty cheap usually..

I hear so many mixed feelings on those. Most is they're just a neutral speaker so if you have a crappy amp it'll keep on sounding crappy. Most hate I see is for the G12M-70 as a shrill lifeless speaker.

Already stuffed them so I'm on track with that already just to solid up the THUMP coming from the cabs.

We're taking a few weeks off to write for the next album, so the next show is Oct 23rd then right after that is with Jake E Lee so I have a few minutes to experiment before then.

love all the responses everyone, thanks.

How about this,

The G12M-70 are 16ohm

The V30 are 8ohm and the 80's are 8ohm.

But the cab with the G12M-70's is alot better than the 80's. Would you run mis match with the G12's at 5.6 ohms (amp at 4ohms) or swap out the 80's for it so that match up?

no

Guess it's time for a speaker swap then. I knew the answer already, just like to hear what people think.
