Here's my take on it. If I own an amp and it doesn't do what I need it to do it's worth nothing to me.

The amp is still worth fair market value to someone else so why not just sell it and use the money for an amp that does do what you need?

yeah, what vlad said!!!!!

I mean, if you want a marshall but then don't want it to sound like a marshall, well don't buy a marshall....a few mods I can understand..PPIMV, etc, etc...maybe a little hot rodding to get it to sound like a best of breed marshall....

I don't understand buying a marshall and modding it to the point where it turns into a mesa mark III...after a while all these modded marshalls start sounding the same to me more or less....

I take it back
I want a 40 year old amp with 19 gain stages.

I had a JCM 800 for years. It was a 1988 2210 which was the 2nd version with a bit more gainl. I guess you could say Marshall modded the original and that became the production model.

I have no problem with modding anything if you're willing to pony up the $. My Voodoo modded DSL is my favorite amp of all time.

I don't see any reason not to mod those Dinos. I've modded all and everything, even a 70s Superbass, my Herbert and so on.

And today its not a big deal to "repair/replace" frontplates and such with shops like Metro or Ceriatone (speaking of Marshalls) for the vintage guys who are buying a re-stocked SLP - and after some time they need to buy additionally 10 pedals, a hotplate or any other attenuator - before they start to mod it again . . . :D
Circles . . .

Doth sayeth the Splawn fan who's very amp is an offshoot of a modded Marshall.  ...does it sounds like a Mesa Mark III  :D

What he's saying is that if you want a modded Marshall, there are plenty of options. You don't need an old amp and have it modded into something that's already available. But hey... interpret it however you want.

I'm about to have my JTM 2x12 combo modded big time, but it's a reissue so no big deal.
I wouldn't care if someone dropped a 350 engine into a '70 Nova, or changed all of the interior.
I say it's your amp to do with what you will...just realize the value it won't have after all the mods.

Ulitimately, yeah. It's your amp and if you want it modded then mod it. There's no right or wrong here. It's all opinion.

For every old Marshall that's drilled and modded, that's one more off the market which makes the old untouched ones more and more rare/valuable.

Between you and me, at this point I'd rather have a mucked with old Marshall. I can make it what I want. Obviously I wouldn't pay $1200 for a non-working hacked-up pos, but you get the idea. LOL! :D

Me too...I'd rather use something up till it wears out than have it sit in a closet.

Exactly!
On top of that, you're talking about an amp that's largely unuseable by your average hobbyist.

I can't use 100 watts on stage anywhere, not even close.
I can't use it in my basement, the kids would cry and mommy would kill me.
Basically, you need no neighbors, no kids and no wife to pull that off. :D

The other option is that killer Attenuator you mentioned before.

Nah, I'm in his same situation, wife, kids, neighbors and I manage my 100W NMV's just fine

Yup. Prior to my modding my SL, I was running a Rich Mod and Hotplate and had good results at low volumes.
I either got sick of it, or just got bored. Hence my tinkering... LOL! :D
But I'm not about to turn that amp into 200-gainstage 4 channel parallel fx loop uber-tight metal firebreather. LOL! :D

you mean the tone killer attenuator?
Can't comment. Never heard it in person. But being that 70Strathead loves it, it can't suck too bad. ;)

He can make a smokey amp sound good... :D
Because 90% of tone is in the player not the gear... LOL :D

Why should I have to sell an amp I already own that can be turned into something to meet my needs just to please someone else? To go thru all the BS involved in selling, shipping, and buying something else just to keep "collectors" happy is goofy. What happens when the Peavey Butcher guys decide those are collectable?
I just saw a Peavey Rockmaster I modded sell for $388 when those things couldn't get $75 six years ago. I guess mods aren't always looked at as bad. I see modded Camerons with old orignal filter caps being sold for over $2000 when an original Marshall is lucky to get $1200. Every person puts a different value on things.
