I searched for related threads prior to posting this and didn't find anything. So, here it is.

Any thoughts from Egnater Module owner's on a module (or a module with a mod) that could get some of the VHT flavor.
To be much more specific, I've upoaded a clip of the type of VHT tones I'm looking for.

I strung these together from clips from various VHT websites. The clips are all played by Brian Kahanek before he switched over to Elmwood Amps. The first two sections are a 58 relic Les Paul. The rest were done with various strat style guitars.

Since I love this type of tone - My descriptors would be: woody, chewey, tight etc,.
Splawn owners everywhere I'm sure would hate it and describe it as: dry, scratchy, no sizzle.

Either way - for better or for worse, that's what I'm looking for. I'm fairly set on just buying the VHT Sig:X and waiting for the E2 to get me some Egnater goodness in there with it - probably the T/D and VX or SL modules.

I don't play high gain. It's all about SRV, Rory Gallagher stuff for me.
I'd like the VHT as the go to tone, with the option of hitting some real blackface fender cleans (which I'm not convinced the VHT can achieve) as well as some Hendrix style Marshall cleans (Bold as love intro.)

I'd love to be able to just go all out with an M4 and get it over with, but if I can't get that VHT tone, I don't think I'll be satisfied.
I'm not stuck on VHT for any particular reason other than it has a very unique tone which I have not heard or even seen an attempt to copy.

Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated.

thanks
Nick

I forgot to mention, I'd be more than happy with any general tone advice on how to achieve these types of tone.
Maybe achieving this type of tone is more simple than I've considered. Perhaps a stock module just needs some certain EQ or something.

I would think SL would probably be best, but I dont have one so hopefully some other others will chime in.

chickenoolie:

That's a great sound. I read your post twice and listened to the clips.

I do have a SL (a/k/a SL1) module. Based on what my ears heard, I think you
could get a close approximation w/ some EQ, but I feel like I was hearing more power amp
gain from the Deliverance. I think the SL might be a bit thicker, but it is definitely
chewy.

Not only that, but the CLEAN sounds you can get from the SL are excellent, as well. If you want SRV, you should have no problem dialing that in.

But even with that said, I almost want to tell you that a gained out T/D module on the deluxe side with a clean boost will probably get closer to that sound in the clips. Call me crazy, but YMMV.

FWIW, the SL has become my "must have" module for its sheer versatility. Excellent alternate cleans and mid-gain tones on tap + a "moderate" higher gain Plexi mode that we all love.

Just listened to the clip again (a little longer this time). I think the SL
is the best bet here.

Just bumping this to see if anyone else has thoughts on this tone.

The tone I'm looking for is in the first few minutes of this clip:

Thanks for the reply marvcus. Do you guys agree - is the SL my best bet?
What about some of the higher gain modules (MHG) with the gain turned down?

Again, I'm just talking about the lead section. The clean bluesy break up at the end is a different thing.

thanks
Nick

Call me crazy, but I think that sounds more like VX ch B more than the SL.

Two of my fav modules, BTW.

Channel a SL2/HBE gain backed off,60 VOS les paul vintage pickups :D

I don't see any reason why you couldn't get that first set of sounds out of an SL module. You might find you want it a little tighter and you could mad the bass cap for that. There are a number of ways to get there as mentioned, I think the Vox (Rory used Vox and Fender amps)could do it too, a Bassman or even a Deluxe, with various overdrives/boosts but the SL right off the bat will get you very close I think.

He must be pretty loud in the clips. They do sound great, but I can hear the power amp and the speakers working hard to get that sustain without much help from the preamp. How else would you get that feedback as the notes trail off? I can hear those speakers moving some air around and back to the guitar.

So I guess we need to consider that too. What module and what power tubes maybe?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I like the multitude of answers -
SL, SL2A with gain turned down, T/DD with a boost, VXB.

So, thanks again.

I do remember from the original description of the Kahanek clip that
they were playing in a jam environment and the mics used were two
overhead mics. It was not a close mic'd cab.

It was a D60 not the D120 and my guess was they were ripping it
pretty loud. I think that's also part of the reason I like it so much.
It always seems that with me, my favorite tones come out of live
performances:

Rory Gallagher - A Million Miles Away (Irish Tour)
Rory Gallagher - What in the World (Live in Europe)
Billy Gibbons - Got Me Under Pressure (Live From Texas)
Stevie - Texas Flood (El Mocambo)
Jimi - Red House (New York Pop Festival)
Jimi - Machine Gun (Band of Gypsys - Fillmore East)
Clapton - Further on up the Road (E.C. was here)
Gilmour - Sorrow (P.U.L.S.E. - not exactly a raw live recording but still
way better than the original studio version to me)

You mean I can't buy a Fender Twin and TS-808 and recreate El Mocambo
in my basement apartment without waking up my sleeping baby in the
next room??? Oh don't we all remember those days of utter gear confusion
and myth gullibility.

Thanks again everyone for the help.
This forum is so lively and helpful. I once went on to a forum and poured
out my gushing thoughts on my current amp (back when I had gushing
thoughts about it) and the only response I got was: ...fanboy...

Well duh, dude - isn't that the point of laying down the 2500 bones!

Anyway, you guys are great. Thanks
Nick

These are really incredible amps man and have endless options  Welcome aboard!!!!!

Bear in mind that VHT amps are a lot stiffer in feel than most other brands.

Also remember that even though the Deliverance sounds great loud, it's not really a power tube distortion type amp. Pretty much all comes from the pre.
