Most Dissappointing Piece of Gear You've Ever Bought?

I bought an Egnater Rebel 20. I needed a low powered versatile tube amp to play at home. I couldn't get a decent sound out of it. I tried new tubes, different cabs, nothing worked. Considering the huge hype these had and respectable forum folks recommending it, I thought it would be perfect for me. Wrong. What a POS. It seemed to be made well but that's all I can say that's good about it. I traded it to a guy on CL for an Ibanez AR-300. Best trade I've ever made. It's not an expensive guitar and I don't play it much, but it's way more useful than that damn Egnater Rebel 20.

My Rebel 20 is my backup/emergency and practice amp. I get great tones out of it. Bass dimed, treble and mids noon and lower, bright switch "on", and set to "loose". And the key... gain at 10:00 and hit the front end with my Plexitone (prefer the EL84 settings for a more Marshall vibe these days), or gain at 1:00 and boost the front end with my OCD. Either way, using these pedals tightens-up the amp and it sounds pretty damn good for such a cheap amp (bought mine for $345). I know that it sounds pretty good, because it's sitting on top of an XTC 101B and the Bogner doesn't totally put it to shame. ;)

Rols Guitar. Biggest POS I ever bought. Neck was warped beyond correction, body finish sucked, and the wiring on the neck pickup gave out right after it showed up.

It's still sitting uselessly in my basement after all these years.

Peavey 5150.....it sounded like a buzzing mess.

I agree. I've never understood the love for this amp.
Me three. I really wanted to like it. I think its ONLY good for the brootz. That "solid state" sizzle seems to be what people like about it but It's definitely not for me.

Perhaps. I don't play the "br00tz", so it isn't for me.

I certainly don't get the comparisons to the SLO. The 5150 sounds about as much like a SLO as my farts sound like a Dumble.

Clips, please.....

Of the farts?

Orange Dark Terror, by far. I wanted something conducive to playing at low volumes at home. With high gain at low volumes, it's real fizzy sounding like some cheap-assed Chinese-made imitation amp... oh wait... That's what it is. It sounded pretty good when turned up, tho. My hand-made 50-watt SLO rip off sounds killer at low volumes, so the DT just didn't fulfill its purposes better than what I already had.

Suhr Guthrie Govan for me. Sounded way too thin and brittle to my ears, and didn't do heavy stuff well. Shame, because in every other way it was an excellent guitar. Can anyone recommend a beefier Suhr? I've got my eye on a black Modern Frost :)

You would probably really like our "D" series pickups. They are much warmer and fatter with a natural top end roll off due to the double row of adjustable screws.

This is a good quality to me.

Wasn't impressed by my SLO at all. I mean, it sounded good... sure - But it cost way more than tone suggested

5150 is still the one amp I've managed to keep through at least a hundred of others (well... technically I haven't kept the same one... but I don't think I'll ever sell the one I own now).

Bogner Alchemist 2x12. Just hated the dirt sounds although the cleans were fantastic.

I picked one up a few years ago based on the hype and it sucked so bad I thought it was broken   Sold it less than 24 hours later.

Then again, my favorite amp is the VH4 so what do I know? :dunno:

Yeah, I had one for a week back in '94. Couldn't dump it fast enough!

Interesting because I thought my Zendrive provided a decent emulation of your farts which are quite musical.

Diezel Hagen... seriously posted it for sale the day I got it in... you can say I didn't give it enough time or whatever, but I've never owned a piece of gear I couldn't immediately get a tone out of it I liked... at the risk of sounding too harsh I don't even think it deserves the Diezel badge...

...and both sets of BKP pickups I've tried so far... do NOT understand the hype at all... love my Duncans/ Dimarzios, and the Dragon II's in my PRS...

Diezel amps have a vibe to them that some like, some don't. However, I tried a Herbert that I liked and I owned an Einstein and couldn't sell it fast enough, hated that thing. I thought I would have liked the Einstein since I liked the Herbert......nope.

Actually, the worst purchase I have ever made (and thanks for reminding me  ) was for a Roland VS 880EX from a mom and pop's store called Styles Music in my old area.

I paid about $2700 for the VS 880EX, the custom case, and cd burner.

It was an 8 track recorder with some virtual tracks (just in case no one remembers what it was in the late 1900's and early 2000, lol).

I remember I headed over to my brother-in-laws place to show it off to him and I found him using digital means to record called a Cakewalk computer program which allowed him to move around between all the windows where I was having to hurt my eyes looking at the little window on the VS 880EX at the store plus trying to remember where everything was located.

I immediately went back to the store and they told me there was NO REFUNDS just store credit.

I had 29 more days to decide what I wanted to do with it (they had nothing I wanted there especially since I was getting everything at a much lower price back then at GC).

Well, I waited until the last day then decided to open it before returning it that day, and they said they wouldn't give me even store credit now since it was opened (I think they new the VS 890EX was coming out the next day).

I figured I could sell it at a few $100 less but then the DAMN 890EX came out literally the next day for $700 less and my unit dropped to below $900 for a new one and a used one was at a price below $600. I was pissed off about the whole thing because of the high price and loss and especially since I remembered how my brother-in-law used his computer monitor for everything.

I quickly jumped on the computer software wave for recording and never looked back.

The unit is BRAND NEW and sitting in it's case.

One day I will donate it to a recording history museum and hopefully get a tax write-off, lol.

I know I wasn't the only one pissed off about the VS 890EX coming out because I saw many of these being sold over the next year at close to $300 and $400. I tried putting it up for sale at $700 because of it being so new and coming with a case and a person called me up and said I was a douchebag for listing it so high and that he sold his the year before for $300 then he hung up on me, you could smell the alcohol on his breathe, lol.

I never bought a new Roland product again (I wait until Sam Ash or GC clears out their new but discontinued Roland products for new Roland replacements (I get them at a much, much, much, lower price this way)) and I never listed my number on a site like Recylcer or CL again as well.

We learn from some mistakes.
i paid $150 for mine- no case or cd burner---scuzzy--pfff
gotta love 1/4" mic inputs ;) at least its pretty portable

Diezel VH4s, hands down. I payed a ton for it with a matching cab & was left wondering why I payed so much for an amp that just sounded so stock, like everything else I was hearing out there.

My new TC Electronic G-Major II... It adds 'white-noise' to what was a quiet signal. My 22 year old Rocktron Intelliverb adds no noise at all. :dunno:

Odd. My GM2 is perfectly silent, in fact, that was one of the selling points for me.
