Moving on from the 5153.

Anyone here move on from the 5153? Specifically the 50W? I have had the 50W head now since the early fall. I'm still not getting it dialed like I like at band volumes. Im thinking of moving on...I had a Carvin Legacy I for like 8 years and loved it, so I am thinking of replacing the 5153 with a Legacy III. A buddy of mine has a Quickrod that I think sounds fantastic, so I might consider one of those if money allows.

If you used to own a 5153, what did you move on to?
 
The only thing about the QR though be prepared, the 5153 is a different beast

The QR will cut great in a mix but its a pretty dry amp like a VHT. if you are used to the super saturated 5153 sound and dig that the QR will be a night and day diff.

See if maybe your buddy will lend it too you for a rehersal, Splawns are kind love/hate on soud and feel
 
Went to a modded JVM. Then picked up a modded DSL. Then went back to a 5150III 50w! Basically, I love the three great sounding channels, great loop, MIDI, etc
 
I had the 50. It's a fun amp to play for sure. But in the end, the gain was a little "toyish" compared to my other amps. I also found the Red channel over the top and nasal.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. My Splawn hands down is cleaner, tighter and much more dynamic

Even saying that I kinda wish I had another one because it was a fun amp to play even though it kinda got lost in a band mix
 
Soldano HR50. Not as compressed sounding. More open and organic. The mids cut way more than a 5153.
 
Just happen to have one in classifieds extremely cheap!
 
I did, got myself a Marshall SLX instead. Now, I want to mod the Marshall :)

I moved on, but it had everything to do with the volume drop on the clean channel. I play rhythm in a cover band and have to go between clean and crunch all night long. The lack of volume on the clean channel when switching meant I had to put something in the loop and play MIDI games. I got it hoping I could use it (and nothing else) for gigs where my rack rig was overkill. Having to MIDI control something in the loop defeated that purpose... The Blue channel was awesome and the the Red channel was more than I needed, but sounded great. I would have kept it if the volume drop wasn't an issue.

I moved on to a Dual Rectifier Roadster (among other things)...

I did. I liked the amp but there was this mid-honk sound that I couldn't dial out of it properly. It did sound very good when loud. Mine had an unexplainable noise that would happen at certain intervals. Very strange. They had it in for repair but couldn't fix it and I was given a credit. I have had some crap luck with gear in the past year!

I moved then to a Kemper and enjoyed that but it was missing something live for me.

I am now in a Marshall JVM410HJS and couldn't be happier at this point. It's everything I ever wanted and more in a amp.

I still own mine simply because i cant justify buying a diezel/fortin/rhoades at the moment.
 
I have a Splawn QR B+ and a 5153 Mini. Completely different animals. The Splawn will eat a 5153 in a mix. No competition.

That being said....the Splawn is dry as a door knob. The B+ option gives more saturation but I still have to boost it. The B+ kicks out about 80 watts ( vs 120 on a QR without the B+ option ) so I can push the QR a little easier but it still takes a good deal of volume to get the best tones.

I love the 5153 because it is way more forgiving and easier to play. I have been playing Splawns since 2008 and my chops are plenty tight from using a QR or a Nitro. The 5153 just has that buttery lead tone that can be attained with no boost.

Im still honeymooning the 5153 but I do loathe the shared EQ. Kills the clean tone completely. I just roll off the volume on the blue channel with better results. I fear I will grow weary of the tone of the 5153 but also dont know if I can go back to the dry feel and sound of the QR.

Sell 50w. Buy used 100w. Problem solved.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I am pretty certain at this point the 5153 is going. I am even contemplating going old school with a single channel Marshall and my Plxitone pedal. I'm not sure how this is all going to pan out yet!
 
I love the evh 5150 series. That said I love the splawns I've played but for sheer modern edgy aggression I love the evh's. Personally, if a viable option for a user to move from the 50 watt evh to a single channel marshall, I would think the evh 50 shouldnt have been an option in the first place. But I realize I come from a different mindset than most on here (I play death metal).

Also, after recently getting the evh cab compared to my diezel 412's, the evh celestions bring a pretty different tone to the table compared to the diezels v30s...so whatever cab you are using could potentially skew your viewpoint imho.

As always, our ears lead us where they want to go lol...

This. Personally, my Deliverance 120/Sig: X amps WERE my favorite but had to sell of due to family issues. My new Quick Rod has seriously killed ANY GAS I have had for other amps. It is very similar in feel to the Fryette Deliverance with that modded british flavor. Best of both worlds for me. Get pretty modern as well. More versatile than I thought it would be.

It depends on what sound you are after. Are you into more modern sounding hard rock/metal, or more of an 80's/classic rock kind of thing? For modern, I'd stay away from the QR. If anything, give the 5150 III 100 watt a shot.
