Moving on from the 5153.

I never really could jive with a 5150 III. 100W or more recently the 50W. I also thought the gain seemed toy like in the 50W, the 100W not so much. It still had the character but the poweramp really helped extend the dynamics into the lower mids. Not having a resonance knob wasnt a problem when the amp started to get some volume behind it.

I still prefer my 5150 II and dual rec over the 5150 III at band volumes.

If you're looking to move on i recommend a recto reborn series, also known as a recto multi-watt.

It depends on what sound you are after. Are you into more modern sounding hard rock/metal, or more of an 80's/classic rock kind of thing? For modern, I'd stay away from the QR. If anything, give the 5150 III 100 watt a shot.

I must disagree here. The gain past noon on gear 2 or 3 on a QR is plenty modern. User error would dictate otherwise.

For sure not into modern, which is why I think the 5153 isn't working for me, and why I liked my Legacy so much. My cabs are old Marshalls with greenbacks/blackbacks.

Well, that all depends too...I don't argue that the QR has the gain...but it's the voicing that I consider to be the more dominant deciding factor between modern and classic ("brown sound"). Basically, isn't the QR built around the platform of a hot rodded Marshall? Now, the Nitro I would argue is Splawn's offering of a more "modern" voiced amp.

I think this is a "hands of the player" argument/way of thinking. When I play my QR ain't anyone mistaking it for VH! LOL! It definitely shines for rock and hair stuff and they are certainly built for the Marshall fan but when I am playing music from bands like Primal Fear, Laaz Rockit, Kreator, Iced Earth, In Flames, etc. it nails those sounds as well. I think part of the "brown" association comes from the high frequency of VH style clips that are put out there.

I agree. I had a QR back when 3rd gear was a mod he added, before standard production. It had plenty of gain, and damn thing was STUPID loud!

I had a Splawn Competition for awhile. They're great amps but I didn't think it was anything special. If you liked the Legacy than the Legacy III is probably for you. I played whatever the other new lunchbox-sized 3 channel amp is from carvin and I thought it sounded fantastic.

As far as the 5150 III bashing goes; shame on all of you The 5150 III 50 Watt is by far one of the best amps to come down the pike in a long time and it easily gives amps costing twice as much a run for their money(Same can be said for the 5150 and 5150 II). Yeah it's not perfect and it's not for everyone I suppose but I've been gigging with it for a year and half now and it nails every tone I need it to nail...

Splawns are stupid loud. Louder than a SLO i believe

The 5150 III is plug and go IMHO, whereas the 5150 II requires more finesse with tube selection and position. Once dialed in though, i just prefer what i have used for so many years. 5150 III is close but you do notice a few dissimilarities between the two

As far as tube selection and all that other bullshit, I don't fool with it. Plug and go is fine with me I love the sound of an original un-molested Peavey 5150. I don't understand why people modify them but whatever.

I've only played the 100 watt 5153. They are a good sounding amp. No hate here. Just not for me.

I think that the XXX is a great amp. I have one and a 5153 50 watt. The XXX is trickier for some to dial in as it as an active EQ and too many folks EQ w their eyes rather than their ears.

I would hate to be w/o either.

^^^^^^^^^^^^Great amp with the right tubes. JJ's in the preamp mainly, IMO.
Crank the master and adjust the channel volumes and those amps will rip. No boost needed, but use a gate.

I have both the original 5150 and also have the EVH 5153. I was having issues with the 5153 cutting through in the mix no matter how I set the EQ. I dusted of My trusty Peavey 5150 and took it to practice and it cut through the mix and sounded tighter and heavier/fuller than the 5153. I still love the 5153 and plan on keeping it. I am not sure if I just have an awesome sounding Peavey 5150 or what. I owned one several years ago and I do not think it sounded as good as the one I have now. I have not looked inside of the amp to see if it has been modded and I am not seeing any signatures ect. So my 5153 is on stand by for now. Depending on which way the wind blows.

Anyone here move on from the 5153? Specifically the 50W? I have had the 50W head now since the early fall. I'm still not getting it dialed like I like at band volumes. Im thinking of moving on...I had a Carvin Legacy I for like 8 years and loved it, so I am thinking of replacing the 5153 with a Legacy III. A buddy of mine has a Quickrod that I think sounds fantastic, so I might consider one of those if money allows.

If you used to own a 5153, what did you move on to?

I did. I liked the amp but there was this mid-honk sound that I couldn't dial out of it properly. It did sound very good when loud. Mine had an unexplainable noise that would happen at certain intervals. Very strange. They had it in for repair but couldn't fix it and I was given a credit. I have had some crap luck with gear in the past year!

I moved then to a Kemper and enjoyed that but it was missing something live for me.

I am now in a Marshall JVM410HJS and couldn't be happier at this point. It's everything I ever wanted and more in a amp.

I had a 100w which I used in my cover band , I know exactly what you mean about the mid range honk, I could not dial it out. Channel 3 was just way too hot for me. I hated that amp more every time I played it.
Bought a Friedman "Marsha" (which I still own) now I play mostly an AxeFX II
