He's got a point though... These amps are made for playing. Seeing 50+ hoarded into a corner makes me think of all the waste of tonal pleasure and the effort of making them. To each their own I guess... :confused:

Guitars and amps are much more like sexy women to me... They are to be enjoyed as long as possible and not hoarded into a room untouched until they are old and forgotten. :D

The Investor/Collector isn't the same game as that of the player.

This guy is both, he has been buying and selling since the beginning in the 1970's. His guitar collection is crazy and the guy is one of the finest players anywhere and has supplied guitars too and played with allot of legendary guys. It is in his hands but he also likes the good gear and has made a fortune doing nothing but buying and selling them since he was 17 years old.

That is very cool. Guys who are players and recognize great gear AND recognize future investment potential w/ the ability to move on a good deal, are imo-- in the best position of all.
 
You know, I somtimes wonder if my 4 amps are too many.......I don't really have to worry about that anymore :lol: :LOL:

I'll agree that the collection is impressive but I too see it as hoarding. Yes they are investments too but every market has ups and downs and unless he is going to actually sell it, it's only value is on paper.

I subscribe to the theory that while a lot of vintage gear may sound incredible it's not worth me chasing after it and paying ridiculous amounts for a piece of gear I'd be afraid to use. That said I do have one vintage amp, one vintage guitar, and a vintage echoplex. Not the most collectible models but I acquired them for use not for investment. I gig them and will do so until they can't be gigged anymore then I'll move on.

Guys remember most of these amps were purchased in the 1970's and the 1980's. $25 for some, $200 here $300 there... a few that were all the money later on but not many. I know he was offered over $500K for the amp collection several years ago and turned it down. ;)

When I was collecting all my "hair metal" guitars I picked them up VERY CHEAP. In the early 90's when Grunge was taking over the world and every one was laughing at the 84 San Dimas that had Wild graphics on it. I didnt care since I was getting what I dreamed of getting when I was a school kid and was picking them up cheap. But I didn't see the upswing of the guitars and sold them off pretty much as quickly as I was getting them so I could BUY MORE. I wish I would of hung on to some but thats life. It really was to me just a piece of gear and everything was or pretty much replaceable. I sold them since I got out of playing and was obsessed on just being a gear whore and gathering as much and as many as possible.
Owning over 150 electrics in the past 25 years I am now down to 3 and am very happy. I never played very much when collecting and was more worried about getting more gear. I would get a guitar in (Sometimes 2-3 a week) play it for about 30 minutes then back in the case so I could track down more axes on the internet.
The collecting bug is Dangerous to players. I am happy to be a PLAYER again!
Just my experience with GATHERING gear. ;)
 
Just about everything I own that is vintage was given to me as a kid in the 70's. I have picked up some tubes and pedals over the years.

It does seem that there are those who don't seem to want to acknowledge the idea that some of us buy stuff (NOT for full retail or full street price) and do so for a variety of reasons--

To: Gig, Collect, Rent, and/or sell for a profit--

It's funny that some people might find it excessive for a musician to have a big collection of amps, guitars, pianos, etc. but see nothing wrong with having a big DVD, CD, book, Star Wars, stamps, baseball cards, or whatever type of collection where they were played/read once and never again.
