My search for a new amp...

I love the Quickrod, its got an awesome tone. I think they are built in NC, and thats where I live. I could see that working out :)

I would love to try out a Bogner, but I don't know anyone that has one around NC :(

My only concern with the Quickrod is that I might be stuck with that 80's "brown sound" kind of tone, that is an awesome tone...but I might get tired of it. I have never played a Splawn so I just don't know much about them. I guess thats why I'm posting stuff on this forum!

I think Splawn has a store front where you can try out the amps. I have a QR and it does more than the Brown sound. Don't leave out the Nitro because that is a very cool amp. Huge bottom end!

Which would do better for like an Alice in Chains type of tone?

Anybody know where I can try out a Shiva in North Carolina???

give Fat Sound Guitars a call in Cary, NC

the owner of that store is a member here on this forum - although i havent seen him post in a while. he carries the good stuff, see what he has in stock.

i can understand the mesa stuff - its the first thing that came to mind with the bands you were recommending. i would give the new recto's a chance, but the other stuff is all to taste.

the splawn nitro is close to a 5150, save the cash and get a 5150/5150 II instead IMHO.

a quickrod is great, so are the promods. but i have played 2-3 quickrods - one quick rod I and two quickrod II's and none of them i liked at all. i got lucky and found one of them at the guitar center in charlotte. the others i have played were owned by someone i knew or was for sale in craigslist and toyed getting one a long time ago/tried one out.

splawns shop is about 5 minutes off of highway 321 south.

Didn't all those bands you mentioned play/played with rectos?
A rectifier with a boost in front is a sound to behold!
Nothing else like it, it's like getting mule-kicked in the chest.

he wanted high gain and the bands he listed all played them, but then he says he hates them :dunno:

who knows - like i said give them a try again, especially the newly re-designed dual recto's.

I didn't say I hated them...I played through a friend of mine's Dual Rec in Nashville at the Sound Kitchen a while back. It sounded really nice, but I wasn't into heavier stuff back then. The only others I have played were at GC, I'll leave it at that. ;)

I'm not closed-minded, I'll give the new Dual Rec a chance! But I have to say I'm really diggin' the Shiva right now. It seems really nice.

Seriously... If you could somehow afford it... You won't regret it...

I'm sure I wouldn't, I just can't justify spending that much on an amp.

A good condition used Bogner XTC 101B would be my 1st choice to your question and now knowing your musical preferences. It can be polished up and shined down with some decent stomps - whether OD, boost, or the like. A lot of variety can come out of these heads. Sure, a 20thA is a remarkable incredible masterpiece amp, but to save costs and get started, and just get a feel of something, I'd suggest a used 101B.

Peace,
V.

Thanks guys...so right now its Shiva vs. XTC 101B vs. Quickrod vs. 2010 Dual Rec.

Decisions decisions.... :aww:

Do you think the Dual Rec can cover AiC stuff? I know it could gain-wise, but I'm talking about that huge Marsha thump sound if you know what I mean.

im not going to lie, im not into the whole cameron/marsha/suhr/wizard modded marshall thing. i prefer a stock marshall or a 5150/SLO type of tone. the dual rec's are knockoff SLO preamp circuits with the tonestacks located where the SLO had the effects loop cathode follower.

judging by the design of either amplifier, i would say no. but i cant compare anything to an amplifier i have not played. the re-designed dual rec's are an improvement from the earlier ones IMHO - it's definately something worth looking into.

You're not alone. I'm not into paying $3K+ for an amp that's basically made from a kit, and makes you do a fucking reach around on it to change any of it's tonal switches.

I'm also definitely not into paying $3K plus for an amp that takes 6+ months to arrive. I mean seriously, these wait times for guitar gear are way outta hand. Boyd Coddington can hand build you a totally custom hot rod in three months. You can order a house full of custom designed, hand crafted furniture in about six weeks. And the most shocking of all, you can get a fucking 3000sqft house built and moved in less time than it takes for a flavor of the week guitar amp to arrive.

Buy an SLO, XTC, Mesa, or one of a dozen other amps and be done with it. And depending on how you dial it in, sound just as good if not better than not much else.
