I'd still take Axl trying to push out the notes. He had his own thing going on at least. He screeched vs singing through his nose with that awful vibrato. Axl does suck too though don't get me wrong! I think the issue among the main stream now is that there are less guys who can sing. Back in the 80's there were a ton of solid singers in hair bands. Now, of what gets played on the radio, you've got emo punksters, people singing like Nickleback, or people not singing in a rock style. When you have a few that do, they get air time. This is the case here. Slash could have found someone better but maybe he would not have been able to find a professional who shows up day after day and works. He's probably had his fill of junkies (Snakepit singer, Wheland etc..) and didn't want to deal with it anymore.
no.
what gets played on the radio is pure marketability.
looks/image first
talent a far second
musicianship and performance talent a far 3rd
i'd guess that every "classic" rock star band pre 1990 wouldnt even get a look by labels these days.
they dont want talent, they want carrie underwood, taylor swift, aimee lee, myles kennedy, bieber, etc etc etc, and they want them to sing the tried and true clear channel formatted song stylings. or, some rehashed version of a band that was successful in the past, but only for profit margin...not to please a listener in ANY manner.
