That's clean! Good score! This is where I am at. After all the modded amps, etc. nothing gets as Marshall as a good Marshall with a boost.
Sell your Friedmans

Right here....I would never buy a modded marshall again....My JMP boosted is the best tone i ever heard!!!

Awesome score! Happy NAD! What do you prefer as a boost with the 800s? Boss SD-1 maybe?

Hell, I haven't even heard of that one. LOL. I'll have to check it out. I see a MXR Carbon Copy in that pic. Are you running it into the front of the amp? I just bought one and I'm thinking about getting rid of it because I can't get it sounding really good in front of the amp OR in the loop.

Nice amp Paul.....Nothing like a good stock Marshall....Hit it with a Cusac screamer and the tone can't be beat

I run the time based & modulation thru the loop of the DSL & EQ, Boost & gate thru the front of both amps thru a Lynch Tripler [just 2 amps now] in a wet/dry rig.

The FX sound like both amps are wet, its a Killer sound.

I recently put my OFA Tube Boost on my small board , sounds killer boosting my Splawn

Nice amp. If it were mine, I'd add a depth circuit to one of the output jacks. Then, I have the choice to have one stock and one with added depth.

81, nice, congrats. Let's go back to an 81 classic and do some reminiscing...here's to 81 Marshalls
Although I don't know for sure what they used on this, but going out on a limb guessing it was a Marshall...

Congrats on the amp. That looks like a nice clean example.
I have to be honest though. It's nice to get all misty eyed about vintage Marshall's and all, but there are modern amps being made today by some great builders that in my opinion smoke most of the old stuff. At one point I had a 73 superlead, a 79 2204, an 83 2203, an 80 2210, along with a Fortin modded 2203. Then I got a BE 100. Everything but the Be100 is gone, and I don't miss any of those amps at all. The Friedman even kicked an XTC 101b out of the house. ( still have the Helios though )
Old filter caps, no fx loop, needs a boost to sound good....whatever.
If the Friedman, or the Bogner aren't raw and "plexi" enough for ya, there's always Wizard MC or MCII.
OK, back to the reminiscing....

I prefer older Marshalls.

They're from my Generation.

I already have a Friedman

That thing is clean! It's hard to beat a good single channel 800, they can be more versatile than you'd think.

It's all perspective. A new BE costs $3,699. For that price I can buy a JCM800 used for $1,600, but a used Marshall 4x12 with greenbacks for $650, a new production Charvel San Dumas for $899 and a Cusack Screamer used for $100. And come in at $3,250. I'll have $400 in my pocket when I'm done. even used BE's sell for $2,800+, so for $400 more I get a complete rig. Like I said, perspective. It's nice to have choices though. Friedman makes great amps and people love them. Marshall does too.

I got to open it up a bit this morn.

Amp is Brutal & Relentless with a Boost, like Jekyl & Hyde. [with/without]

Sounds fresh too like right outta the box 1981.'

This amp will come in handy and is a welcome addition.

It had original RFT pre's from 81' in it but i didn't really like them.

I have a basically new old stock 83 2204 jcm800 here and I goose it with a mij sd1 and its very good but the newer amps like the helios which I also have just have a nose on it across the board without using a boost, have a loop and a clean channel.

Congrats Dan. I still need to get a good jmp or 800. The few I've owned weren't great examples but that one you just picked up looks clean as they come. Happy jamming

Marshalls vary, as we all know. The newer boutique production stuff is very consistent which is awesome. But, none of the newer builds I've had can touch SOME of the stock vintage amps I've had, for pure tone. The 2C+ and at least 8 or more bone stock 2203/4/Jubilees I've owned are all a notch above most newer production amps I've played or owned, and that includes Friedmans and a few Bogners. I owned a BE100 that was modded to be very open and bright, better to me than even the 2016. But then I grabbed a 1990 2555 and the BE was for sale.
The only newer production amps that can compare from my experience are a Wizard MTL and SLO.
Lots of great sounding amps by great builders, and kinda splitting hairs a bit..but we all like what we like.
