IF you do get it modded, do not drill any new holes. You can get gain mods that are on push/pull pots, you can use low input jack for a pot, you can use one of the speaker out jacks for resonance mod etc.. little subtle things can be done to the preamp to shape it and those things can go on a push/pull. Do not turn it into swiss cheese. I have an amp just like that with 4 push pulls on front and one on the back and it gives me the Jose thing and 800+ without changing the character of the amp whatsoever. Back to stock and i can turn it up to 7 and enjoy a big beautiful stock 800 shaking the walls.

No to swiss cheese
Yes to subtle mods, no changes to cosmetics if you must

Easiest= Boost it or use one of those new Hot Mods.

Keep it OG...... with pedals now adays if you want to "mod" it just use a pedal as a Mickey Mouse mod :dunno:

I won't mod a stock OG JMP or JCM.
Too many great amps out there, to mess those up.
Well, maybe a JCM 4 holer. Those are punishing. Wouldn't hurt my feelings to make it easier to work with.

Like was already said, in this day and age no sense in modding one. Already a million ways to get a modded Marshall sound.

Fek is right.

And Dan's right, too: If you do decide to have it modded, send it to Dave Friedman. I remember hearing the very first Friedman amp prototype in Dave's old shop in North Hollywood. I thought to myself "Right now, I am hearing one of the best amps in the world". The tone was glorious. Just fuckin' vicious.

Whichever way you go, regular maintenance is critical. Definitely get all the filter caps (and possibly all the other electrolytic caps) changed out, etc, etc.

Have fun with that thang!

And bias filters too.
Im not all about the mods. Yes i have the best Friedman KS JMP 2203 on the planet but i had a pristine 1978 2203 & an 82 vert input
800 2203 that i sold intact as i didnt want to mess with those.

Yeah, and then “be patient” like @dcburn mk.ii who sent Friedman an amp well over a year ago.

You want Dave's work, you wait for it. His amp business has been backed up for over 20 years with clients like us mere mortals as well as EVH, Slash, Lynch, Motley, and on and on...

Being the Los Angeles amp mod King means a lot of work. Ever hung out at his old shops before he started Tone Merchants? I have. Dude's got a very solid midwestern work ethic.

He rebuilt Edward Van Halen's magic Marshall, and designed and worked on Ed's live amp rig. EDWARD FUCKING VAN HALEN, YO!

Back in the day when you'd call him, his machine would just say "Leave a message".

He's also a really good human and the world could use more people like him.

Yep, I'm a fan and proud to say it. Dave's a good dude who works magic.

I don't doubt you. I've owned two of his amps and just ordered the IR-J.
I actually emailed with him before I shipped to make sure there was time, he could do what I wanted (of course he could, but I built the amp), and that it wouldn't be years long investment in time.
I'm about 15 months in with no end in sight...

I will add that back in June '24 I emailed with a question and he told me to be patient.
I haven't messaged since...

Yeah everyone worked on EVHs amp. Don’t care. Not worth the wait, but more so receiving no communication. Sick of hearing that kind of crap and I feel bad for the guys that get messed around by the amp “artists”.

I know he’s done some good stuff. I like a couple of his amps. But fucked if I’d wait 15 months for him to mod an amp. He’s not building it. I’m sure it would be an afternoons work for him.

Ridiculous.

Yeah, but they stopped sending amps to him because, you know, waiting over 15 months to get an amp back.
