So stoked for ya... Blue is off the hook. Red? Even hairier.
Did you go with a Class A/AB switch at all?
Enjoy - there's a lot of tonality this head offers - between the power modes, the new/old, vintage/modern, excursion, everything - SO many tweaks on this amp... I also love the fact it stays true to the EQ as you ramp up the volume. It really is outstanding. I too am interested in hearing an EL34 versus 6L6 platform comparo. When I bought mine, I just felt with my past experiences with 6L6 amps, I'd be better off with EL34s. I'm not at all displeased with the choice, but then, I I always think - "
hey, they made this head with 6L6 as the original circuit...hmmmmmm...".
Whatever, play and play some more. That's what it's all about
In all honesty, if I'd got a ridiculously smokin' deal on the EL34 version I'd have gone for that (just because I'm more of an EL34 guy). However, I have to say I'm shocked at how midrange-y, crunchy and growly this amp sounds with 6L6s - totally off the charts in every way. I'll try to record some clips over the weekend
Now, the question is...will it or the Herbert get more playing time? I suspect the Herbert will remain my #1, but its supremacy is no longer total!

I hear the dilemma regarding the 6L6 vs the EL34 versions. The has beea lot of talk and I decided that I actually HAD to try both. I got decent deals and bought each so I could try both.
Long story short, I just traded to EL34 away and I am keeping the 6L6 version, even though it doesn't have the a/ab switch and the other one did.
I have other EL34 amps and as spirit7 mentioned, Herbert just crushes, it's EL34. However, as V mentioned, the 6L6 was the intended tube version for the XTC. That said, the real test was playing both back to back. I was liking the sound of the both, yet the 6L6 had the edge for my ears, with similar knob, switch and power settings.
I feel like I spent enough time with both to feel completely happy with my choice. I played a Suhr Modern LE 2009 guitar (alder body) straight in to both amps for testing. The cab was a Marshall 1960 classic with Celestion 25's (I am pretty sure on the speakers, it's been a long time since I cracked it open to look).
Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by the 6L6's crunchy tones. The blue channel is simply sublime!! Red channel has gain for days...can't imagine needing more. Bottom line, the 6L6 version was winning me over, but I still couldn't decide.
Then, knowing I couldn't keep both, I ended up setting up a trade for a Soldano. The buyer said he wanted the EL34 XTC. I was literally relieved that I didn't have to choose.
I sent the traded amp out Monday and the test was, did I miss it...I have not missed it. I am totally psyched about the 20th that I kept.
In the end, both are exquisite amplifiers!! Nobody is unhappy with an XTC 20th, nobody that I have heard from anywhere!!
Enjoy what you have, it will continue to blow your mind daily
