On the Mark IV you can add gain in a lot more ways than turning the gain knob to 10. The treble knob adds gain. Most in the know run treble at least on 7, having the rocker switched to Mid Gain adds gain, running the mid and presence higher helps add gain and then you can fine tune all that with the GEQ.
I set mine real close to Danyeo's pic. If you set it like that and it has the gain of a JCM 800 it might need service. Also make sure you set the switches in the back to Pentode and Simulcalss and run full power for maximum gain.

Hmmm. Interesting. I need to experiment more. I tend to find a great sound on each channel and leave the knobs never to be touched again. However, with this amp there are so many fantastic tones that it's tough to just set it and forget it!

Maybe the couple I've played needed service, but they weren't vicious at all. Old school high gain. A lil hotter than a jcm 800 to me. Couldn't stand it. But then again the triaxiis was the only Boogie I've ever liked at all. I'm not a good judge for these amps. I don't care for the "American" thing. I'm a el34 man myself
Can't imagine a Mark series with little gain available. A 2B I had was gainy as hell, although not the tightest in the world. 2C+, 3s..all have a shit ton of gain? Never played a 4 but I can't imagine it has any less than previous Marks?

The Mark IV is a gain monster. I love the way I can make it feedback without even trying if I set it up for that. More gain than is ever needed and stays tight and articulate sounding throughout. Just a killer amp.

Congrats on your IV! its one of the "island" amps for sure...Mk.iv-b,Mkiii red stripe,Mkiii Coliseum red stripe..since added the ultra rare mesa simul satellite head, now rack mounted.

Thanks again - this is a honeymoon amp for sure, which I want to last!

QUESTION- WHAT CAB?

* Mesa Oversize Recto - V30's
* Mesa Traditional - V30's - I hear this is good with Marks
* Original vintage slant baffle in straight cab Mesa with MC-90's on the bottom sealed and MS-12's in the open top (this cab is a maybe).

We play modern alternative heavy rock, I want a cab that's going to allow full frequency voicing of this amp to come through, no masking or emphasis on particular frequencies. Just full open roar in the lows, mids and highs.

I hardly touch the knobs but I'm always messing with the EQ sliders. Also, I have 1 EQ pedal into the front of the amp and another in the loop. The one into the input I boost the 1k area for that cocked wah lead tone, kinda like Ronnie Lee Tekro or Stryper.

V30s and G12 65s, and EV12L/MC90s are great with Marks. That cab with MS12s would be great IMO, my 2C+ combo has an MS12 and its a very warm and organic tone.

These are my usual settings but it changes depending on the cab and guitar.

I keep RHY2 dialed in as another clean channel. Takes dirt pedals extremely well. There are also some cool ways to dial in the graphic eq besides the "V", such as bumping up the 750 and dropping the 2200 a bit. Great method when recording and using the Mark for both rhythm and lead tracks.

heres my settings.fwiw...any old marshall 1960 works for me...

I use a Mesa 2x12 Horizontal Recto cab and a Bogner OS 2x12 both with V30's with my Mark IV. Both sound awesome. The OS Bogner is just amazing sounding though.

If going for a 4x12 and wanting to stay Mesa. The Traditional cab will be tighter and punchier. The Rectifier cab has a huge bottom end but is slightly looser sounding.

Clips please .... i must hear the MESA secret sauce. ;)

By warm and organic, is there still plenty of high end spank happening?

Not as much as the EV or MC90, but still good high end. More warm mids with the MS12 than the other two. If you're playing heavy stuff EV/MC90, MS 12 is a warmer rock speaker IMO. You can dial in more warmth with the EV/MC90, but the MS12 has mids that are more present..not in a bad way.

Oh you didn't just bust out The Sentinel?! You're my new hero!
Sounds great.

I just realized my settings I posted are scary close to Danyeo's, at least for the Lead channel. Also, I ran the 6L6/EL34 mix for years in mine but just recently went back to all 6L6. I think I prefer the mix slightly for dirt and 6L6 for clean which isn't surprising.

Btw, sweet clips BrokenFusion!

If the Oversize is off the ground on its castors/wheels is it still too muddy?
I'm thinking of getting an oversize, running a pine divider vertically to separate the two halves like a Roadking cab.
That should cut some of the woof.
Way I see it, the larger the interior space, the more room for frequencies to get lost.
Tight projection and making that cab like two vertical 2x12's could work....??
