NAD! EVH 5150III 50w

I've gigged one for 2 weeks now and its either channel 1 and pedals for OD or Blue channel and rolling the volume knob back for clean (ish) sounds. I'm using a Strat for clean stuff and its ok.

I've not found a way to successfully use both channels live.....

What Ive been doing is when on green, I engage my loop which has by boost pedal. The boost is for solos while on blue and red channels. When I engage the loop/boost while on the green channel, I get basically the same volume. Plus the green channel cuts through the mix anyway.

I run a small midi set up. When I click preset 1 on my midi footswitch channel 1 is selected on the amp along with a GE-7 in the loop to boost the signal to match channel 2.

Sweet.

I want one

These are made in Vietnam? Ha! I remember when EVH made a big thing about leaving Kramer because they were made overseas and he thought they were made here in NJ....
Interesting

Is anyone using a GSP1101 with their 50w yet? I'm thinking of getting the 1101 and doing the 4CM with it.

I ordered a 50 watt EVH 5150 III Friday night. I found one for $899 with free shipping and no tax.

I like the idea for using the boost for channel 1 and using it for a lead boost.

The midi feature is a great plus!

Thanks guys. Only got to try it briefly after collecting it but I cranked it through a Bogner OS2x12 before I bought it... sounded great. Thinking of picking up a local used Marshall 1936 with V30s until the 2x12 cabs become available. I know they're not the best cabs in the world but it's local and really quite cheap. Thoughts?

What about a Zilla-cab, i mean you live in UK?

These amps seem to sound great, but I too am wondering why so many are popping up for sale?

I bought one last summer... IT RIPPS !!!

I got stupid decided to sell it just after the new year...

So.... I just very recently snapped and decided to score another whole new 5150II 50watt 1/4 stack...

IT'S A BAD ASS MAMMY JAMMY !!!

I think this is the best sounding of any of the EVH heads period.

I use a rocktron in the loop and a midi mate for the infamous channel volume CURE

Dude... Are you trying to tell us all around here that "gear fiending" does NOT transcend the space time continuum???

Because it's Fender, they produce "millions". I feel I see just as many Diezels for sale and the productions numbers are probably much less.

Would love to get one of those and a GSP1101 for effects and channel switching with the MIDI on the 5153. With the 2x12 that would be a killer little rig.

That is my exact live rig! It is definitely killer, the MIDI switching works great...I even run a couple amp models from the GSP through the EVH in 4CM, not bad at all...highly recommended!

These amps do sound great.
Some video's seem to make it sound "fuzzy". When I played it a couple of times it didn't sound as buzzy live in the room.
What pre and power tubes brand do these typically come with?

One more question, by design do these amps have a hot rodded Marshall built in, considering EVH used modded Marshalls.
Do you guys think some of that tone is in there?

One reason I like this amp is because it has a tone of gain, but it's not tuned to have a "dark" tone.
May pick one up this weekend to compare to my Eggy Vengeance head.

I think the 100w mops the floor with the 50w, in tone and versatility.

I had four 100.watters including the stealth and I got rid of them all pretty quick as they just didn't do it for me. To each his own... They have more versatile functionality but not the nice sag and feel of the 50 waters on the lead channel IMO. They feel very stiff to me.

Tubes are all JJ's for all versions (unless you're talking about one of the first 1000 or so 100w built in 2007, they had a combo of EHX and Sovtek tubes)

I agree with you about it being high gain without being dark. There is a recent video on RT of someone comparing a Triple Rec to an EVH. I think the EVH sounds much better because the Mesa just sounds too dark to my ears (in that clip anyway).

I think the fizz people speak of is due to the highs and the presence way too high and the mids too low, especially at high volumes. I run the highs and presence under noon, sometimes around 9:00 each.

I do think it has sort of a hot rodded marshall tone, however it is more refined with a little different mid frequency focus. I think the Marshall comparison can be made when listening to Jake E. Lee's new band and Steel Panther.
