What difference do you hear between the original trannies and the Mercs...or is it impossible to tell with the other tweaks?

Huge ! but the power trans was not putting out 100 watts.

Where did you get an original '69 PT & OT? Did you have the original transformers laying around?

When Brian bought the amp, the last owner saved the original tranny set when he swapped in the MMs.
