Thanks guys. Buy stiff I mean lack of that liquid sustain you can get from amps. A few amps from my past:
VHT Pitbull 50CL
Mesa Roadster
Rivera Ktre
Bogner XTC 101B
Marshall JVM 205H
Marshall JTM45 ri with M/V mod
Of that group, I can say the VHT and Rivera were stiff and I can place the EVH firmly in that camp
I could only play the 50 watt 2x12 combo before I bought and it was fantastic. Nothing like the stiffness of the head.
I also can tell it reacts to pickups very differently. It's not diggin single coils
I've heard they are biased very cold from the factory so I'm going to check that tomorrow
Right, yeah I can see where you are coming from. I think I may have just gotten used to it. However, I find there to be some sweet spots with the gain knob. I find the blue channel is best with the gain at 2 o'clock and red channel with gain at ~10:30 to 11:00 o'clock. Although I haven't extensively tested it, yeah I don't think the amp agrees with single coils too much, unless you play on the green channel and are looking for that fendery jangle-tone.
Again, the more I think back on it, the wolfgang guitar seems to have that liquidly lead feel and tone that made me fall in love with the amp. I think I've probably compensated my playing to try and get the same feel. Although I've tried my best to wean myself off OD pedals, I might throw the ole' SD-1 to see what it does with the blue channel.
