The 5150 has a fixed bias

The 5150II (6505+) does not have a fixed bias...It has a bias trim pot on the outside of the amp near the power tubes. It also has bias test points on the rear panel. The sweep on the bias trim pot is small but I find the 5150s in general to sound good with a low to medium bias setting (not super low) but not high either, it starts to get undefined if you get the bias up high where some other amps might sound find this amp shines in the 20ma per tube range.

The ISP decimator II is hard to beat, it works great in front of the amp. The ISP G-string also works great. At the moment my live rig has two Decimator IIs one in the loop and one in front. I would be fine with just one in front to kill feedback but its nice to also kill the hiss after the preamp.

Regarding the bias, that is what I understood. The controls are on the back. Not sure what the other guy meant....

Dude, do yourself a favor and throw an MXR 10 band in the loop. You won't believe your ears. HNAD, those things are monsters for high gain. Highly underrated in this day and age of boutique gain beasts.

Ok, found one on CL and picked it up tonight. I'll throw it in the loop.
How do you set it for maximum impact?

That'll do it. I usually start with a slight V and adjust from there depending on pickups.

You dig it?

NS-2 in front of the amp!!!!!!! Ran this for years and loved it. Also, once the "new" wears off.. and your feeling froggy.. Send that thing to FJA. I've done it and will do it to every 51/65 series amps I've owned.

I've wanted one since i heard Islander(with a sonic maximizer and orange cab) used them on their new record.
I bet it would sound monstrous paired up with my Herbert.

What the hell is that crap? sounds like Fred Durst fronting the Deftones, but gayer.

That's crazy! If anything I drop the gain slider a hair below zero. Add a few db of volume and adjust a slight V with my 6505+.

The sliders are in the shape of the metal fist. :)

I've used a beat 5150 a bunch of times, they are more versatile than people give them credit for IMO. And I agree for high gain will pretty much hang with anything.

I was able to try the ten band at low volumes.

Wow! Like everyone has said, the amp just lights up. The top end cuts like nothing and the bottom end is so tight. Unbelievable.

Thanks for the heads up! Really looking forward to using it with the band. Tuesday night.

Takes an already great amp and makes it even more of a beast. Glad you like it. Pretty cheap investment for what it does to your tone, especially if you snag one used!

Try it in the loop of your Recto too. Sometimes you'll get a phasing issue with the Mesa loops but it does the same thing for the tones...

Report back how it hangs at band volumes on Tuesday!

I have the 5150 II which is the same amp.
I use it along with a marshall JVM
It is a great amp especially used with a para EQ and a noise gate.
definitely experiment with the crunch channel. there are some really awesome classic and 80's rock tones in that channel.

Oh brother, I dialed up the crunch channel as you recommended. So big, warm and fat. Unbelievable. Thanks for the recommendation. Fantastic rock tone. As good as anything. No kidding.
Switch to the lead channel and its thunderous. What a killer amp.
So damn late to the party, but glad I made it!

I love these amps. Just picked up another 5150II a few weeks ago.

I don't run a noise gate at all and never have any issues with a ton of hiss or excess noise. The feedback is super controllable, too. My pre on lead is usually on 5, depending on what guitar I'm using.

I'd really like to get the EQ and see how that works for me.

The Block Letter on top is my friend's, the II and the SIG on the bottom are mine. The sig and block don't have BIAS adjustments but the II does.

A 6505+ with an MXR 10 band eq is a combination that hangs with any amp in its genre. I bought mine off CL for $550. I flipped it for the same amount a few years later. Get a bias mod so you can run the tubes hotter. My amp tech also did a clean mod of some sort that really improved the clean channel so it did not break up as much.

Happy new amp day ! This thread makes me want another one.
