Need a good Marshall tech near Ohio

I am in Cleveland, but am willing to drive up to 4 hours so that I don't have to ship a 2203X. Who knows of a good shop in that range?

The amp is a 2007 JCM800 2203X modded by David Hopkins with the Pandora mod. Pulled it off the shelf on Friday after a couple of years and is sounded glorious! Turned off the standby on Saturday and POP....nothing. Power tubes were still lit up but no signal coming through.

Edit: Just remembered that Hopkins is within my 4 hour range. Will reach out to see if he is taking on any repair work. Still looking for other options.

Sounds like a power tube went bad and maybe taken the HT fuse out. If a power tube shorted out then you may have to replace a screen grid resistor that's on the power tube socket if it burned up.

It's possible a new set of power tubes will take care of it as the screen grid resistors don't always get taken out.

All 4 power tubes were still lit after the POP. IDK. The almost 20 year old amp needed some love anyway. I just want to do my best to make sure that it goes to the right shop the first time.

This is who I would recommend. We both took a bunch of Egnater classes together, and he does tons of repair work out in the Akron area.

The tubes being lit just means the heaters are still working, but one or more power tubes are likely shot. Could be a cap too.
Good call on taking it to a tech and having it serviced.
At a bare minimum, any time a power tube goes out, you have to check all the screen grid resistors in the amp.
Hope it all works out, and is nothing too serious.

Thanks! When I did a search, this shop did pop up.

Going to reach out to two or three techs tomorrow and see what I get back. Have quad of Winged C's that I bought from Valve Queen that should have a good amount of life left in them. Leaning toward F&T filter caps and any other cleaning up that needs to be done with the insides.

Nothing against anyone else, but if David's that close, I'd make the trip... Dude is next level compared to most.

Probably not a bad idea!

While the tech is replacing all the filter caps make sure he replaces the two 10uf electrolytic Bias caps in the bias supply. I highly recommend ARS 50uf/50uf filter caps for a 2203 but there's nothing wrong with F&T. I had all F&T's in my 68 plexi for about 15 years and after changing them out for ARS I do seem to prefer how it sounds with ARS filter caps albeit the effect is very subtle. I will say I feel the ARS are the closest new production to the old UK LCR filter caps.

Hello, sorry to hear about the sudden failure of your amplifier.

If it lights up, and there is no sound, check the continuity of the HT fuse.

It likely is something very simple either a parted or a 5 W resistor on one of the power tube sockets.

Rob is a nice guy and a decent tech but out of 6 amps I’ve had him work on? 3 failed again within a few hours. I’ll not take anything else to him. Last one lasted less than an hour. I didn’t even bother to contact him.
