Need opinions on a bedrrom tube amp for heavy music

Anything similar to the E530 in the same price range I should be looking at as well?

And do most Pre amps have a small built in poweramp? Or just this one?

I'm not aware of any other preamps having built-in poweramps, although I wouldn't be surprised if that rackmount AMT preamp had something like that. It's gotten some good reviews but it hasn't really been popular or anything. It's called the SS-10, IIRC.

I feel I should point out that every time I see a thread like this, people fail to mention the benefits of lower-efficiency speakers. There's a big difference between a 97dB/1m speaker and a 100dB/1m speaker. The lower the dB rating, the more you should be able to goose the powertubes in whatever amp you use before your neighbors call the cops :)

I would say of your options go with the axe fx, or the carvin v3m or the blackstar. The others I would be hesitent to buy for just bedroom playing. I know you did not mention it but an Egnater Renegade might be useful in that scenario.

also the blackstar ht5 would probably be perfect for what you want and would be very reasonably priced and sound good.

Using 100w heads in the bedroom baffles me. And I say that based on experience of doing it for a long time. They just don't sound particularly good at very low volume IMO. Some are obviously better than others but there's still *something* missing and that something is usually the element that turning that volume knob up creates.

I think the Engl is more of what I'm looking for tone-wise, and the 1.5 watt power amp is handy for what I'm going to be using it for. Plus I could use it like an Axe and plug into an interface, and then into my monitors if I wanted to amplify it more. Add a couple pedals and I'd be set I think.

oh yeah and unless you have super cool neighbors, don't bother with the big amp + attenuator route. You will never be satisfied with what is coming out of the speakers and if you are it is probably too loud.

That's true.

Gonna go with the Engl E530...so now I'm going to need some opinions on some pedals...

Would the effects in the Nova System be as good as individual analog pedals?

I'm probably going to have an EQ (MXR 10 band), a compressor, a noisegate, delay, reverb, and maybe a Maxon OD808. Which order should I put these things in the signal chain?

Marshall 100 watt Super Lead......
close...marshall major!

seriously, for home playing i'd go with a used axe fx

I ran the E530 with a TC G major in the loop for everything, and didn't need a boost.

Is it me or is a $2200 preamp/processor with a pair of headphones overkill for a bedroom jam?

If you are on $4.80 an hour then yes.

If you own Warren Buffet, then no.

Another vote for a 50w diesel Einstein. Does not need to be played loud at all and sounds really good

I really can't afford and don't need all the features of an Axe Fx. I'm going to try the E530.

Can anyone recommend a cab for this preamp? 2x12? 4x12? (In case I end up getting a cab that is) There is a couple clips on youtube with this preamp running straight into a Framus 4x12 that sound beastly. I didn't know if I should look for a dark and round sounding cab to even out the E530's bright and thin? tone?....

Thanks..

4x12 is a bit excessive for a practice amp, isn't it? I plugged my e530 into a VHT 4x12 today using stereo to dual mono 1/4" cable, and it's much, MUCH louder than I expected from a 1.5w poweramp. It would definitely be a good practice rig with a small cabinet.

haha I thought so but I didn't know if the 4x12 would make it sound bigger than something like a 2x12 at the same volume. Can you recommend me a good 2x12 that would be a good match to the E530?

I'm not sure, but speakers with plenty of midrange. Avatar make good budget cabinets with a handful of speaker options. You might want to find some low power speakers too, because I haven't even cranked the lead volume past 3 o'clock with a 4x12 before it's too loud.
