Need some advice on a good delay/reverb effect for recording

Hi guys,
Forum newbie here ;) Was wondering if I could get some advice on a good delay/reverb? Mainly for home recording, solos and stuff. I went from using an amp modeler that had all that stuff (delay/reverb) built in which sounded great for recordings but not so good for the actual guitar tones (the amp itself). I'm now having a blast with my Friedman Pink Taco but feel it sounds just a bit dry on my recordings without some reverb/delay.

So far I've spent a ton of time researching on youtube and the ones I thought sounded great were the Keeley Multi Echo, the Strymon El Capistan, and the TC Flashback. I'm ok with spending a few bucks for a good product, just having a hard time picking something that will sound awesome.

And since I'm asking maybe a recommendation on boost/overdrive as well? Are Ibanez tube screamers still the thing? (been out of the loop for 15 years or so). I notice my Friedman amp with hot/active pickups are great for high gain but my stock Gibsons sound more hard rock than thrash. I play mostly thrash stuff so I feel I just might need just a little something to make my Gibsons a bit heavier sounding (without having to change the pickups).

Thanks, looking forward to some advice!

I am really happy with the Strymon stuff I have. The El Capistan and Decco are great pedals IMO.

Boosts...I personally like the Klon, Tim, Timmy, Vemuram Shanks, Vemuran Rage, Xotic BB. The Tubescreamer is certainly ok but there are better IMO. It all really depends on what you are going after in all sincerity. Dusting the amp with any of the pedals I mentioned will not be a bad thing..may also want to dust the sound as well with a compressor. In certain situations it can work wonders. My preference ALWAYS is to get everything gain wise from the amp if at all possible. If not, I select as needed for what I am going after.

Hope that helps. :)

You cannot lose with strymon. Their digital effects are well worth the high price. I would also recommend empress effects for a good delay(they have a few options).

As far as overdrives go, well there are a ton of other OD pedals that are better than the ibanez ts9. The ts9 is very classic and honestly still a valid way to get more aggressive.

I hope this helps. Welcome to the forum

Eventide are releasing a multi-FX algorithm for the H9 which will include modulation FX, delay and reverb. It´ll probably be hard to beat if you want more than one type of FX running simultaneously.

From the press release:
SpaceTime is Eventide’s new multi-effect algorithm that combines modulation, two delays, and reverb into one easy to use effect. The delays are based on Eventide’s Vintage Delay algorithm from the TimeFactor pedal and the reverb section draws from both the Plate algorithm in Eventide’s Space pedal, as well as Eventide’s UltraReverb native plug-in. Unique to SpaceTime is the ability to route the delays and reverb in series or parallel after modulation, further adding to its versatility and creative applications.

For the $, you can't go wrong with the Digitech Hardwire series. The DL-8 delay is just an amazing value in particular. Also the Neunaber Wet reverb is worth checking out.

How are you recording? If your using a DAW use a plugin for delay. Replika from Native Instruments is a great one. Record it dry and add it after, that way you can play around with it as opposed to recording with it and your stuck with the way it was recorded.

Like the guy above mentions, if you're recording, you must have some access to effect plugins.

The most flexible way to record (the one that gives you limitless options so you can futz with different fx, settings, etc) is to record bone-dry and add the bells n whistles later in the DAW.

That being said, assuming you can use VST plugins in your DAW, try this free one on for size:

That's a good point.

Sorry for the late reply (I try to unplug from the net on my days off to hang with the kids), but just wanted to say thanks to all for the suggestions.

Definitely targeting the Strymon El Capistan for delay and just read a few threads today on boost/over drives. Going to pull out the good headphones and youtube the ones mentioned til I can't keep my eyes open anymore ;) I did google the Cusack Effects Screamer Pedal V2 a few have mentioned and I got to say that sounds impressive. So that would be better than an TS9 right?

And plugins for DAW (in my case SonarX3) is something I have messed with just barely but I am definitely looking for something I can mess around with and take with me for jamming with friends too.

Thanks again guys, this forum rocks!

FTW!

Headphones and YouTube help but it is a compressed audio.

Strymon Flint was awesome
Digitech supernatural reverb is a great pedal for verbs
TC Flash back is good... Tone Print is a plus
TC 2290 is awesome if you can swing it and like rack gear
Effectron delay is good for vintage rack

They are the only ones I used or can remember using
