Need Some Small Purchase Ideas to Keep my Sweetwater Credit Card alive

Those short atlas mic stands are handy as heck for quick mic'ing up a combo or bottom set of 4x12 speakers. My bro owned in on mine....freakin' sav.
Man, I just bought a mic stand before getting notified about the card’s status đŸ˜–

What are you guys liking for a variation on a 57? It’s my usual go to and I blend with either a 421 or a Breyer M160, sometimes a condenser.

Go with an E906, great mic for guitars.

Alternatively, you could maybe pick up an EQ pedal, if you don't have one. One of the best tools for guitar amp tone sculpting.

I have an MXR 10 band in the loop of my PS2. That EHX LPB-3 is intriguing though for the front end.

Man I been wanting an EV RE-20 for close mic'ing guitar but it probably ain't gonna happen this year.

Didn't like that one at all. It's good for bass though.

Out of the EV line the RE27N/D in "less presence" mode or maybe RE320 did better.

Interesting. Any remarks on how it stacked up against an SM57?

I had been planning to record some horns as well and it seemed like the RE-20 would've made a good choice. I used it at a radio station interview for some interview stuff we were doing down in San Antonio and liked how it worked on my voice......

First off close-micing electric guitars is strange. Both the speaker and the mic have proximity and positioning effects. That said, IMO for a close micing dynamic you want one that has some hype but not a huge amount.

The RE-20 has almost no hype. The Chinese-made SM57 has a shit ton. IMO you want something in the middle, which all the ones I suggest fall in that camp. The M88 is probably what I use most often but the e906 is cheaper and very good.

The proximity effect cancelation of the RE-20 is not super useful on guitar since you can create an artificial bass roll-off by moving towards the cone center. So the biggest selling point of the RE-20 is not IMO particularly helpful there.

The RE-20 fits a lot of spoken word stuff, is GOAT on horns and string bass and good on electric bass, kick drum, and many things you might use a condenser on. I own 2 and use them frequently. Just not for guitar.

I 2nd this on the Re20. On a 57, M201 and M88 shootout I watched I liked the 201 quite a bit (M88 a close second) but it’s $450. So need to find a used one.

Yeah I would probably order them the opposite way around (M88 better, M201 a hair behind) but it's splitting hairs. Whichever one I found in the mic cabinet first might well get used. I feel like the e906 needs to be in the discussion due to price though - it's much cheaper than the Beyerdynamics and it's IMO good.

Now a Chinese 57, I'm rooting around until I find something more to my liking.

From what I heard in the demo, the 201 is my choice if it’s a bright speaker or a high gain amp with a lot of sizzle I want to tame a little and the 88 for more standard higher frequency excitement. The 88 being a more direct option against a 57.
