They don't get much better than Neil. Well at least it was no surprise.

Will miss him, what a fantastic career.

If Alex and Geddy aren't done, sequels to Victor and My Favorite Headache wouldn't be a bad idea.

Wishing nothing but the best for the Doctor of drums.
What a fantastic way to retire...ON TOP...still.

He was amazing on the last tour. Missing NOTHING...
So glad to have been able to see him both recently and "in the old days."

Love me some RUSH!!!!

Hats off to Neil! A living legend.Rush is one the main reasons I picked up the guitar. All 3 members (and theyre humble, often humerous attitudes and work ethic is book of lessons for bands to learn from).

Neil won't do any touring, but Ged & Alex have said the 2 of them will be getting together early in the new year to jam. I bet Neil will inevitably send them lyrics like he always does & they will record stuff together.

There will surely be new music from them & Neil will agree to do some shows in one or two locations where Rush fans will have to travel to see them. It's too much in their blood for them to totally stop!

Regardless of all that.........What a fucking band of stellar musicians/songwriters with an amazingly unique career done totally on their own terms & with total class

When I was a kid, probably 7 or 8, I was at a friends house and we were playing his dad's records. Put 'A Farewell To Kings' in and when I heard Xanadu, that was it. I started buying Rock records, Rush in particular. Influential band to say the least.

You are probably accurate about this. My Wife and I both love the band but she is an avid fan, especially of Neil. She basically said the same thing. It's ingrained in their beings. She has read all of Neils books maybe three times each and we have many concert dvd's and the documentaries. She knows Rush. Almost everday they are playing here.

The utmost of respect for this band! Iconic. As posted, their work ethic was insane. Geddy and Neil would practice to never miss a note and were all about getting it right every time. Alex was more of a free flow player when they wrote songs and just added that emotion and passion. Geddy said there can be no RUSH without all three of them. Three childhood best friends tighter than Brothers for life. Not something you see often in music history.

We knew it was coming, but I still shed a tear. A farewell to a king. Enjoy your family, thank the maker you got a second chance to do so.

Portnoy couldn't wipe Peart's ass on his best day.

I was always amazed at how hard he hits the drums. You can't really tell by his body movements how much power he has. When you are sitting close the feel of his hits are something to behold.

Only saw Rush once...great show! Sorry to see the man hang 'em up.

  Agreed

It will be funny to read about him auditioning if geddy and alex dont decide to hang it up as well.

Within the last 2 hours Geddy Lee says Peart isn't retired.

The plot thickens. Hope Peart isn't hanging it up.

F'ing media  Anything for coverage

Good news though. Geddy had to address it because Neil would have no part of a news conference

I don't see that ever happening.

When Neil's daughter was killed and his wife died soon thereafter, Neil was completely out of it, not sure he'd ever come back to music. Back then, Geddy and Alex were not even considering going on without him. Now, almost 20 years later, I'm sure they haven't changed their minds. I'd bet the two of them are glad to have an excuse to be done touring.
