Talked to Mike B, and got my RMA. Getting a full service and switchable ++ mod. Mike’s got 30 amps on his bench, says he’s swamped. I told him that’s because everybody’s afraid he’s gonna retire and they’re all in panic mode.  Now the 4-5 week wait. I played a friend’s ++ on Saturday and it’s now mandatory. This wait is gonna be Hell. First world guitar player problems... :D

Nice! Sounds like you might be spending a lot more time hanging out with your friend over the next month as you wait for the amp to return.

You'll love it. My 3rd C+ was a ++. Great amp...you do lose the clean; but dialing your guitar vol back a little and you're almost back to a normal clean.

That’ll be clean enough for me.
I see you have a halfback cab. I played one Saturday and loved it. How do they compare side by side with a Mesa Traditional?

It's kinda flat sounding at low volumes; not bad but the V30 cab is better for low/medium volumes. But...once you get some power behind it, it might be the best cab I've ever heard for HR/Metal. My Coliseum just punishes it with power and when you hear that EV/C90 combo get pushed it is one damn amazing tone. I run both cabs and the halfback overpowers it a bit when pushed..people say they are flat/neutral sounding speakers but if you can get them to cry a bit those EVs are magical IMO.
If I had to choose I'd keep the EV cab before the V30. Just a crushing metal tone.

This is the second time I've heard this lately. Same response, he scored a old mark vertical 212 cab and at volume he said it punished the V30 412.

I played a Mark III + Coliseum through two halfback cabs on Saturday. One with the EV/C90 combo, the other with Redbacks, both killer. That rig could knock the Earth off it’s axis. :worship:

Sounds like you need to get one then. :poke: :D

This place...

I don't need another cab but just found an old vert Mesa 2x12 w EV/C90 for $375.

I disagree. Start at 2:41. You don't have a ton of clean headroom because you have to keep your Volume 1 below 3 or so for sparkly cleans, but they're in there.

I had an old metal grille halfback vert 2x12 a couple years ago, EVs top & bottom. Speakers are like tubes, total personal preference. I didn't care for it at all. Super flat. Now, I did have a chance to absolutely THROTTLE it one day (see pic link) with a friend's blue stripe Coliseum and it was better but not a keeper for me. A little too flat still for 1987. Maybe the 4x12 would be better? IDK.

I really would like to try some Redbacks in a Mesa 2x12. That's a bright cab & I think it would balance out nicely.

And that’s where the C90s come in and put the right amount of color to that cab; at least for me. I also had a vert with both EVs and it was too neutral for me. Not bad though..but you have to put some wattage behind them to get the goods.
Mesa knew what they were doing when they paired the EV with the C90.

Btw if you want Sykes 87 tone find some G12 65s. That’s what he used, along with the EV/C90 and GBs.

I have to have my vol 1 and treble pulled, maxed...I find that if I don’t my lead tone thins out a bit. That’s why I suggest using the guitar vol to get a better clean. If I gigged I’d try a Detox pedal.

Clean enough for this guy!

Congratulations, Beyond Black!
It’s one amplifier that I have never even played through, always wanted to but I just never have had the chance yet…
A monstrous iconic piece of gear to have, enjoy it brother!

Thank you, my Rigtalk brother! It is an exceptional amp for certain, and in my opinion worthy of it’s reputation and hype. Mine is actually the first one I’ve ever played or heard in person, and it did not disappoint. I hope you get the chance to play or own one someday.
