Yes he did,but if you look at the 1978 japan tour photos of the back of Edwards marshalls they look like EL34.

Howard Kaplan said he already delivered the prototype to Ed and he was real gassed about it but nothing was written in stone yet.When asked if it was a plexi circuit or high gain,he said it was high gain.

Having EL34 in the output section does not contribute to the sound as much. If the ouptut tranny will be the same but altered to be used with EL34, it will be a usual EVH skin peel.
If it's a new completely new amp based on an old plexi, it should be called IV not III-IV.
Peavey did the same with the 6534.

This. I think that high gainers get most of that sound from preamp distortion rather than power amp. Changing from 6L6 to EL34 probably won't make as much of a difference as we hope. Take the Peavey XXX for example - same character of the sound is still there regardless if you have 6L6 or switch it to EL34. Still sounds like a XXX.

But I could be completely wrong about this . . .

When I had my old SLO last spring I put some KT 66 tubes in there hoping it would be more Marshally..but it sounded less than with 5881s. Power tubes don't always make a huge difference. Looking forward to whatever they come up with though...

Howard Kaplan is very cool you can email him he returns them all. We had a conversation about the EVH line. He asked what would you want to see from EVH?
Obviously a Marshall styled EVH El34 is the answer. Something like the BE or Helios tweaked by EVH.
They would sell an insane amount of them

This new amp was my idea a year ago after talking to the EVH camp and there was a " Ask Eddie a question" on his EVH gear site which I talked about my amp idea which is now a reality.

How does that make any sense at all? EVH was talking about an EL34 based amp like an old Marshall with more sustain. The Lunchbox is an EL84 based amp...

So what's the answer?

My point is that great ideas wind up being drastically different by the time they hit the shelves, or never come to fruition at all. I guess my sarcasm didn't fully come through.

Until further word, no one even knows if it was going into production, all we know is Ed said Howard K brought a prototype to his house and he was way impressed. I wouldn't hold your breath since the lunchbox was released kinda late in the year, if they don't promote that more at namm. The one being spoke of might not make its way til a year, two years, ever?
