NEW EVH 5150 III-IV ???

Ed is clearly past the cranked Plexi sound and prefers High Gain amps. I'm not sure why people are surprised that his amps don't deliver VH1 type tones.

I was front row right in front of Edward in Hartford...I couldn't BELIEVE how much gain he was using that night...and I LOVE gain, but it was just way too much even for me.

Agree. although the blue channel on my 5153 50 gets somewhat in the ballpark. Enough for sure to get by playing live.

he would not sound anything like he used to.
I dont think EVH got tired of the actual tone of that amp but i think he cant play as easy on it as he does the high gain 5150's
it is more of a fight for him with less gain.

Absolutely !! I thought that often myself. His hands/fingers and overall strength was more being a younger, ( healthier..cough,) EVH.

Could very well be. The higher gain gives him less of a struggle.

I will be curious to see if they can really capture that tone and those things we love with an assembly line amp. We all know that Friedman, Splawn, etc. can do a great EVH tone but you have transformer, etc. options and it is obviously more expensive.

Hopefully they'll put some great components in there and still keep it at a decent price point.

Howard Kaplan stated that he wasn't sure if Eddie used it on the last tour. Here is a picture of the rig. It's the top amp. Howard used red badges on the EL34 prototypes.

What the hell is written on those stickers under each pre-amp tube of the bottom amp?
It's not just the regular jj12ax7 mark, if you look carefully there is plenty of text on some

It's nice to see that Ed still uses two Lexicon PCM70 reverbs in his rack too...
There has been newer stuff out there, yet the PCM70 (v2.0 "Tiled Room" anyone?) has some magic.
I still have one in my studio; sold a PCM90 which -while newer and supposedly more advanced/capable- did NOT have said magic.

Just showing what each tube's job is... Example - 'V5-ch 3 gain stage' etc etc etc

Wow, Tons of gain!!! ... But it doesn't seem too mushy. Sounds pretty tight.

Well this pic pretty much confirms my suspicions that this "new" older tone VH amp

is nothing more than a 5153 stealth with EL-34's
There is NO WAY that will sound like a Freidman or a BRAY, both of which do nail the older VH tones.
Ps, TBH i dont know why they are pimping this 5153-4 as a Older VH tone amp when ed always used
6Ca7's by sylania NOT EL-34's by JJ
