Just bought a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X Open-Back headphones and I love them. I've only ever had cheap headphones and hardly ever used or needed them. I'm mixing a project now and my wife works from home and is always on conference calls. Even though her office is two floors above my studio, I just can't crank it like I used to.

I can't believe how good these sound. I have a pair of Mackie HR824 and a pair of Mackie HR624 MkII and it's not like I'm going to stop using them, but it's good to have a lower volume alternative.

I'm curious, have any of you switched to using mainly headphones for mixing?

Congrats, I like the Beyerdynamic headphones too. I have the1999 Pro as well as a set of closed backs. I use the closed backs in my bedroom hooked up to a Line 6 Stomp for late night or early morning practice.

I mix on monitors but will regularly check on headphones. On my desk I got the 1990 open back and Focal Listen closed back. With sonarworks integrated into the Apollo interface, they sound incredible and it’s good to pop them on for a quick check vs what I’m hearing through studio monitors.

I was looking at the 1990s as well, but didn't want to jump into that price range out of gate. Right now I'm going back and fourth between the phones and the monitors just getting used to them. There will be some days these may have to do the heavy lifting and I'm getting more comfortable with that.

Mixing on headphones can absolutely be done, but I've found it quite challenging personally. I would recommend looking into the Slate VSX system. I use them when I'm on the road, and even in my studio to double check the low end. They're quite handy and I think if you pick one, maybe two rooms you like and get really familiar with them, that you could definitely mix an album with the VSX. My favorite is the Archon studio. The midfield speakers are ATCs like I use so it's a familiar sound.

For non-critical, pure listening enjoyment headphones, my favorite so far have been the Focal OG Clear open backs. Currently I have a set of HiFiMan Arya Organics that should be arriving early next week. I sold the Focal a year ago when I was unloading a ton of stuff, but would gladly buy those again.
