New live video - pod x3 live

My Nickelback tribute played our first gig at my area's biggest nightclub venue friday night. The owner and venue loved the band and want to bring us back asap. We had a great time. Our singer and I both ran pod x3 lives direct to the board and we shared patches that I made. It worked out really well and was so easy to set up and tear down. Video quality is a little iffy...the tape was bad and we only managed to get pieces of these 2 songs.

There is something that I don't quite understand... From what I can gather there seems to be a lot of hostility towards Nickelback... I don't get it. I think they are a great band.

I don't know if it's hostility. I admit, I liked Nickelback at first. But when any band quits being creative and is only writing music to cash in and follows the same boring formula album after album, it gets a little annoying. Let's just say they've over stayed their welcome...by about three albums.

It'd be different if their formula was exciting and actually good, but theirs isn't. You can only write the same pop song so many times. The fact that they're so huge magnifies this and makes it that much more annoying. Some bands can pull it off, that is being immensely popular and saturating the mainstream while keeping some musical identity and integrity, like the Foo Fighters for example.

Chad Kroeger bluntly said in a guitar one interview that once "How You Remind Me" became so popular, he quit trying to play music he likes, and focused on recreating the same song over and over again to simply make money. Straight from the horse's mouth. He loves metal, but won't play what he likes because he wants to make more money. As if he doesn't have enough yet...

To Skyhigh: If you like the music and are having fun playing it then that rocks. I'm just stating my opinion. The X3 seems cool too.

I still love them, I can without some of the foo-foo shit but when they're playing the harder stuff I dig them a lot.

Can't help but think this opinion is swung by what you know it is. The connotations of "good for a POD" are that it doesn't actually sound that good but it sounds good for what it is. I doubt you'd have picked up it's a POD had you not been told?

Absolutely, but not POD bashing at all. I have one (although not an X3) and use it in the house when I'm working on new tunes. Just never got real good tones out of it going direct before. It's always been rather harsh and SS sounding.

I've never heard great live tone from Line 6 before, but recorded, I think they can be made to sound very good. In fact Random, if you would've said you used a tube amp for that song you recently posted, I don't think any of us could have called your bluff.

no offense but if i came across that kind of success i would do that exact same thing to ensure i stay on the charts as long as possible. its not all about art and having fun and creating your musical fantasies for others to listen to. sometimes its just about being successful and making a buck, i wish i had the oppurtunity to play in that band..

I hear ya man, but at the same time there are many bands who have found huge success, but still managed to play the music they want and put the art first. And I'm pretty sure they're not hurting in the success or money department.

Radiohead got HUGE after O.K. Computer and everyone wanted them to do another album just like it. They said f-u and did what they wanted. While I didn't enjoy any release of theirs much after that album, I RESPECT them for moving forward and keeping their vision intact. And I'm sure Radiohead still has a monstrous fan base and are financially set.

I'm sure being a monster rock star is gratifying and amazing, but if I had a chance to be in a band like say, Creed and sell 30 million albums, or Alter Bridge and sell only say 3 million, I'd choose the latter because at the end of the day I'd be making a living doing what I love with moderate success, and I'd still satisfy my creative needs. Chevelle is another great example. They could've written the same hit over and over again and probably been much bigger than they are now, but they do what they want and keep it fresh and creative, and they're doing just fine.

Not to mention that song Nickelback did with Santana and the other one with the dance beat were just huge pieces of shit.

I tried it at rehearsal first with a shitty PA...then I had another gig at the venue with my other band and got the sound guy to get there earlier so we could tweak it for this gig. Worked out well.

I used to use my XT Live through the monstrous PA my old band had, and it sounded bloody fantastic. The trick is just to keep tweaking the patches till they sound right, add some good compression, and avoid too much gain.

I am currently using it though my Fender Hot Rod. I, of course, switch off the amp and cab sim, and just use the stomps and FX, and I am so happy with the results. Great sound, extreme versatility.

Concerning the Nickelback matter... Its my opinion that if you want to make money, you follow the trends and do what you are told, to make sure you stay popular and keep the money rolling.
If you want to make art, do it on your own time, and don't expect to be able to make money doing it.
Simples.

I agree with this...maybe they're happy doing what they're doing? Who cares? I think they put out great music that you don't forget...which is a lot more than most of the music I hear these days.

That's how I approach my tribute bands...they're both gonna make me some decent coin. The nickelback tribute just got booked once a month through october based off of this past show.
